My sister always said that it was harder after Mom left because her kids were so used to constant interaction that they were angry bored without it.

I think the idea is that the father/husband is trying to avoid the explosion between his wife and mother-in-law when she confronts her mother about spoiling the kids.

Good pun, tough audience!

My stand is, if you have to explain the joke, it’s probably not very funny. If you explain the joke and I still don’t get then it’s really not funny.
