Off topic: Midnite (our cat) had surgery today (on ear) and now has a cone for 14 days until they remove stitches. We’re unsure how she can eat or drink with the cone (bowl seems inaccessible). She is clumsy and her usual things seem impossible for her. Any ideas on dealing with the cone and helping her eat/drink with the cone on. We assume (hope) the litter box won’t be a problem.
Rescue report! It’s kind of a good-news/bad-news situation…
A couple of months ago, I posted about a stray silver kitten and her Mama Calico that I was hoping to rescue…and then I lost track of them for a while. Bad news: I haven’t found Mama Calico. Good news: I found Silvercat again! Bad news: this still-basically-a-kitten (six months? seven?) was heavily pregnant.
Mixed news: That made her both young enough to scruff and too pregnant to wriggle away from me.
Good news: I bundled her into a carrier and drove her down to the local (no-kill) shelter. She yelled at me the whole way, and even though she was obviously scared, I didn’t feel that bad about it… Better news: I’m told Silvercat will be fostered out to have her kittens somewhere safe, with support and care and supervision. She’ll then be spayed and in all probability adopted – and the kittens too!

Oh, I understand Sophie so well here. “I see all the fun you’re having, and I’m glad for you, and I’m having my own kind of quiet fun over here by myself…but I wish you didn’t see that as rejection.” It doesn’t always feel great. Been there. Hey, who am I kidding – I live there… Mostly I’m happy on my own with a book and my cats (okay, lots of books, the internet, and a stack of DVDs), and the friends that I keep are the ones who respect that.
Tommy’s trying so hard, though. I hope Sophie can find a compromise activity that respects both of them, and that they can both enjoy. Good to see more of these two!
They make soft collars. You don’t have to use those hard plastic ones. They are vinyl and prevent them from getting to sutures but at meal time you can fold it back while they eat. Also when sleeping it bends and is MUCH more comfortable. I got mine through my vet but I’m sure a web search…
Social awkwardness. Sophie likes her life, but part of her want’s to join the others. What better guide than Tommy. Happy, genuine and without pretension, Tommy is.
Poor Sophie. She looks so sad … but I can’t help asking why Tommy and the others don’t try to do something that she enjoys for a change? Why can’t they share in something she loves? Even in this “furum”, many have expressed complete confusion and bewilderment about wrestling and it’s attractions; no one is telling us that we should join in the fun and learn to love it. I wish the other cats would try a bit of art with her, or a discussion of good books, or a quiet appreciation of the birds and beauties of spring. She is a quiet soul, but I think she has a lot of insight to offer if only they would give her a chance to shine.
An Artist’s life can be a bit solitary by necessity – Sophie looks like she might be curious about what she’s missing out on. Perhaps she’ll stick a toe bean or two in the waters of ‘friendship and fun’ just to see how it feels.
I can’t decide if her expression is conveying wistfulness or worry that a secret guilty pleasure might be exposed. Regardless, that toe beanage is exquisite!
Some more good news — a couple of weeks ago I posted about one of my reluctant-reader students asking to read Lupin Leaps In. This time, another of my students with Autism was having a particularly stressful day, due to some admittedly worrisome medical issues (possible series of peti-mal seizures — still waiting for report from mom after doctor visit), but he read Georgia’s first book and was obviously much more relaxed. THANK YOU GEORGIA! You touch so many lives in so many wonderful ways!!
replace the cone with an inflatable donut. you can get them on Amazon. they are easier on the kitty, and she can still eat, potty, and groom, without injuring her ear.
More news on our cat, Berlioz, jumping the fence.We installed a horizontal board to keep him from climbing the fence, but two days ago, he just jumped 5 FEET in the air and landed his claws on the edge of the board. We may have to install this rolling cylinder to the top of the board to keep him from getting hold.
Shy, artistic, intellectual Sophie might not be into something as brash as wrestling, especially since she has a limited visual field and lacks depth perception. (Maybe her eye was damaged in a fight when she was a kitten?) Tommy’s best bet would be to tell her that the boys really need help with costume design to meet the standard set by the ceiling cats. That would be a challenge she couldn’t refuse.
Thoughts, prayers, and boops for our very own Puck please—I think he will be ok, but he has a “better safe than sorry” vet appointment in about an hour. He’s been trying to pass a hairball for three days now and as of last night was not interested in dinner and just kind of rested like he is not feeling well. This all could just be a hairball! We want to rule out a blockage or anything more serious, though. If you could keep Pucky in your thoughts this morning, it would be most appreciated!!!
I love Tommy’s whiskers today; they really look like the real Tommy’s ‘handlebar mustache’ whiskers that grow downward from his face and then swoop up.♥
Aw, poor Sophie! So shy and retiring. It’s a good thing she has an extreme extrovert as a house-mate—annoying at times, but healthy in the long run. (Even mountain-men types need some socialization.)
I got her another mouse yesterday, named it Snackers, stunned it and offered it to Pandy in her feeding bin. She struck much faster and kind of gnawed on it (she had it by the side instead of the head) then she spit it out when it stopped twitching. Poor baby. I took her outside on the front porch and just held her and let her crawl on me so I could examine her. The good news is I didn’t find any mites or other parasites on her.
I’ve been doing some more research and it seems that some corn snakes will just stop eating occasionally for a week or two as they get older. Pandora is about 15 and 15 to 20 is about it for corn snakes. I’ll try another mouse on Friday and keep an eye on her in the meantime.
I am an introvert in real life. I tend to be more outgoing online, but I am still socially awkward online and off. Sometimes I hit speed bumps where I misread situations and end up responding the wrong way.
When I was born, my mom nearly died due to an alcoholic OB-GYN who performed an emergency C-section on a Saturday morning when he was most likely still hung over from Friday night. She was in the hospital for almost 3 weeks. In those days, babies stayed in their little cubicles in the nursery until Mom went home. Then when I did come home, my first 3 years were spent in a neighborhood where there were no other children my age to play with and my cousins were all 3-4 years older than I. I sometimes wonder if those 3 weeks of early isolation set the stage for me to be an introvert and my early childhood isolated from other kids solidified it, or was I born to be an introvert?
Since we’re being visited by Sophie and Tommy lately, I’d like to share a photo of our youngest in our pride. Sophie, Tommy and Bandit (Robber mouse just didn’t seem to fit…lol)! Off-topic Conan Update. He hasn’t been doing well for the past several days. He spent Sunday night at our local vet; today Papa took him to the teaching hospital at Auburn and he’s spending the night there. They’re giving him a different chemo drug. Fingers crossed that it helps him turn the corner, but the house feels so empty without my big black space-filling model (he sprawls across halls and doorways like a champ!)
Praying for Pucky and the whole BCN crew (Georgia’s gang) and family (us).Lord, Puck is the hearts outpouring of a lot of us and you know how much and exactly what that means. Please stay with our furry friend and guide his family, caretakers and those who love him through this time of his troubles. Thank you for your guidance and love for all your creatures. Amen.
