When push comes to shove, Hobbes is always going to be the voice of reason. He is the conscience and wisdom that, we presume, Calvin acquires as he grows up. Like most people.
when I was a kid I laughed at C&H cartoons, and I still find some strips as funny; but now I am also aware that Calvin is a psychopath: a self centered narcissist that believes people have obligations with him but he has no responsibilities with anybody or with anything, that everything he does is to indulge himself, and that he will do anything even if not socially acceptable to get his way, but believes he is always excused because he is special above the rest of people. If I had not known this cartoon when I was a kid but instead now, my perception of this cartoon would be different
And what 6 year olds can have as much as Calvin does outdoors – and still survive to try something the next day. And to have a pet tiger? I will say, though, I am glad he isn’t in my music class I teach.

The look on Calvin’s face in the last panel says it all. That psychopath needs medication.

It is a trick, Calvin. Listen at the door to see if you hear anyone laughing.

Here’s a tip, Calvin: stop thinking out loud.

Our bathroom door has a secret way to be unlocked from the outside that kids hopefully don’t know about.
