For someone who doesn’t like football, he seems to know rather a lot about it.

I played High School football, but I didn’t get a lot of playing time. I was on one of the special teams. Unnecessary Roughness.

    Is panel 3 worded wrong?

“where the teams ever make them”? Am I missing something? This makes no sense to me.

I am thinking this strip needs another panel to set it straight.

It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve been stumped by Caufield & Frazz, but I think there’s something missing as well.

It is a comedic dig at how badly the Detroit Lions do…. Frazz is set in Michigan.

I subscribe to this comic and read it every day, but most of the time it seems to make little sense to me.

Maybe it is a throwback to the 70’s

Did he drop the n? Should it be never make them? That would make sense for the Lions.

Shall we invite Mr. Mallett to explain himself?

Panel 3 is a typo. Mallet left the N off of “never.” That’s all there is to it. Don’t overthink it.

Football truly is America’s sport. Whether that’s a compliment to either is open to question. Through design or coincidence or evolution, it was made for television. It is very complicated yet very simple. You can keep up with the commentary whether you know a lot or a little of what you’re talking about*. It features a lot of motion, a lot of mostly primary colors and a lot of bathroom and snack breaks. It’s very violent, but the superhero uniforms and gear conceal much of the suffering and even humanity. It divides us into tribes.

And boy, does it have America’s attention span. Even though television makes it easy to watch any team you choose to follow, and even though the members of any given team are drafted from across the country and paid enough that they don’t have to mingle with the community where they play their home games, there’s a strong tendency for fans and coverage to line up with the local team. And once that team is out of the playoffs, it’s fascinating to watch the coverage drop in frequency, volume and enthusiasm.

Said the guy whose own art form requires perhaps 15 seconds of attention per day, 20 on Sundays.

*And who, in spite of actively avoiding football coverage and living far from the East Coast, was easily able to make the solid bet that the New England Patriots would be the odds-on bet to still be in the playoffs by the time this strip ran.

I DON’T SEE any hate here. But certain ones over use the word when they mean dislike.

“Said the guy whose own art form requires perhaps 15 seconds of attention per day, 20 on Sundays.” For a guy who is supposedly entirely full of himself, that seems pretty self-deprecating.
