Why should I show respect for a man who recently died if I had no respect for him while he was alive? Wouldn’t that make me a hypocrite? He was a failure as a midshipman who probably only became a naval officer because his father and grandfather were admirals. He enthusiastically rained death down on innocent civilians. He went to Saigon to party after a deadly fire on the carrier on which he was stationed, thus being derelict in his duties and escaped censure and possible discipline for his actions because of his father and grandfather. He was a far-right hack who played up his POW experience for political gain. I could go on but I think you get my point.
Next he gets to go to the birthday party of a 6 year old killed in Sandy Hook thanks to McCain voting down any sane gun control measures. (John was #1 in Congressional NRA donations)
As is true of all of us, McCain was a flawed human being, but still a human being who also had times of great courage and decency. How about a little less passing judgement and a little more charity? We all will die. What will we each have left as our contribution to the world?
Why do people still believe in a the concepts of heaven, hell and an all knowing, all powerful, loving god who does nothing as innocent children literally starve to death while others eat themselves to death?
I will give Ted props for this: He has no patience for the whitewashing of people’s reputations that’s so common (and so trite) in obituary cartoons.
Also, since Ted is outspoken against bombings of civilians in 2018’s wars, there’s no reason to expect him to forget the bombings of civilians in 1968’s war.
On the balance my opinion of McCain is a positive one, and a soldier’s gotta do what a soldier’s gotta do. But that reason isn’t always enough.
Thanks Ted for an alternative to the hypocritical canonization going on. If he had been pro trump hell wouldn’t be hot enough for him. since we all have to die, I wish him the best of luck wherever he is.

Gee, sure seems like there are some guilty consciences out there this morning. Did Ted remind you of things you’d rather not think about?

Did Hitler get to go to a cocktail party with several Million innocent Jews?? People DIE in wars, Ted…

It was most likely a North Vietnamese bomb that killed the civilian in South Vietnam. Most people have forgotten that North Vietnam invaded the South.

Mattro53 Every word you said is true. And, this was the Republican I respected the most of all of them, which is also true and pretty darn depressing

Very poor taste. I’m not a McCain fan, but EVERY Viet Nam vet was doing the job we asked them to do.
