The creation story in the Bible is amazingly consistent with current scientific theories regarding cosmology and evolution if you understand that the word “day” was translated from a Greek word that really means “an unspecified period of time”. That is – none of the “days” were equal.

What happens when we make the mistake of applying current paradigms to something that happened millions of years ago. The days were marked, not by the rotation of the earth but by epic events that occurred within that particular time frame. Most of the work had been done even before the concept of day/night, before the concept of minutes, hours, days.

What if it was just a story told by a mother to their child who had just asked “Why?” for the 257th time that hour?

Let’s not forget that days are measured differently on Magrathea. The Creation story can still be true without necessarily being magical and with little or no hands-on intervention. The following interpretation is not exactly my fervent belief, but it does model a fairly decent hypothesis for reconciliation of theology and science. So, suppose first contact happened thousands of years ago to a sheep herder who could barely process the experience. Passed down in the best verbal description he could manage, and seen heavily through the lens of his native mythology, the Genesis account is still a pretty consistent summary of the story we get from scientific theory. Plus there are numerous iterations of the same basic tale in both earlier and later civilizations. Going back to the genesis version: Day 1 – accretion and stellar ignition. Day 2 – atmosphere and liquid water. Day 3 – emergence of land through tectonics and appearance of plant life. Day 4 – cloud cover subsides enough make the sky/sun/moon/stars visible. Day 5 – early megafauna emerge from “the waters,” including “winged fowl” (pterosaurs could fit this description). Day 6 – mammals and homo sapiens. Day 7 – “rest.” And Genesis 2 is possibly what I call Day 8 – an isolated population of curated plants and animals, including a pair of humans with highly invasive tendencies which are almost immediately set loose on the planet. At least that’s how you present it to a poor shepherd who has no concept of telephone cleaners or insurance salesmen.
