Store it in a rental unit then it will be easier to toss after rats have chewed it a while.

It’s a lifetime of stuff. You shouldn’t have to toss it all – couldn’t the rich Al just rent a storage unit or something?

It’s hard to do a serious purge in just one session. After you’ve finished the first pass or two and realize how little you’ve tossed – and how much junk you’re still left with – it’s much easier to get ruthless and really let go of stuff that you thought was “important” earlier.

Knew it. The maybe box is totally overwhelmed, the donate box is probably empty, the keep box is overfull, and the toss box, well nature abhors a vacuum except for this kind of situation.

So even though some of us still maintain suspicions about Mom marrying Mr. Gray, a retreat back to Mommy and Gunthie as a household appears at least equally sad.

What’s the point of the 3 boxes? They don’t want to toss anything, too much sentimental value. She doesn’t want to cause too many cherished memories of her boy.

Take a photo of the bib (and similar sentimental objects). Then toss. I did the same thing with sports trophies when we moved. Lined them up on the mantel, took a photo…and tossed.

Toss the object, keep the memory! I’ve read about the picture idea and it seems like a good idea to me. We’ve started cleaning and clearing out, b/c we were told to do it before the down-sizing, by those who have had to do it all at once. Doing all the cleaning out, clearing out and down-sizing at the same time, is exhausting and leads to tears, fights, and why-did-I-get-rid-of-that. Better to do the worst at your leisure, but by bit, as you can cope with it. They’re right, it’s much less painful.

Sadly books are jsut thrown out nowdays. When my in laws passed, we offered to take tons of books to the local library but they said they had been so overwhelmed that the rules were the books had to be within 2 years old, etc. Most of what they had, classics and great books went into a dumpster. So sad. Nobody wanted them. As the baby boomers and their parents pass away, books will be thrown away in greater and greater numbers.

Sixty comments into the foray. For me, many questions, no answers:

One, there appears to have been no discussion as to Irma moving to Al ‘s place. Not that it wasn’t the best decision, just a matter of whose decision was it?

Two, why no angst on Gunther ’s part, considering that he and Les are already off on the wrong foot!

Well ordered pictures on the wall.

    Keepsake momentos.

    A familiar, warm, welcoming, home.

    Gunther’s personal freedom.

All soon to be Discarded at the “alter of sacrifice” when Irma takes her wedding vows next month to a virtual control freak.

And All to make IRMA “Happy.” Jeeze. There are one or two people making WAAAAAY too many sacrifices in this Strip.

Now, THIS is the point where I usually say something outrageous like:“Wow, look at all that Junk. Whatta Fire Hazard! Say, wouldn’t it be GREAT if the joint suddenly caught fire, and burned to the ground, and Irma collected the insurance money giving Gunther half of the settlement and enabling him to move out on his own in an environment FREE from Les?”

    Nah. Instead I’ll say:

“Hey, Irma’s saving Gunther’s old Elmo Bib. Maybe She’s saving it because she and Big Al are planning to make their own “Little Gunther” or Gertrude together!"

PS: And A Cheery Good “BEMOANING” to Ya, LUANN1212!

GnK probably meant this mini-arc as a gag strip or perhaps as a pause in the Gunther/Les tussle. But maybe it also servers as another step in the loosening of the apron strings between the two. The first “loosening” occurred when Gunther accepted the fact that his mother was remarrying. Remember that ostensibly he returned from Peru to “save” his mother from the wiles of Al Gray.

In Fact. That parallels the Tiffany, her father and Ann Eyeful arc of recent hiatus!! Interesting, no!?!?

Gee Whiz, Folks. “Purging” is easy once you have the proper motivation. About two years ago I had stuff left over from at least two moves, stored in a local storage unit. Most of the stuff I didn’t need anymore. One day I got an e-mail from the Storage Unit Manager that My monthly storage fees were going up from $180 a month to $300 a month. “Sentiment” went right out of the window. Went thru that unit like Sherman went thru Atlanta. Kept a few things. Contacted Goodwill and arranged for them to come by with a truck, and told them to help themselves to everything else in my unit. Got a nice tax donation write off for it. Everything They didn’t want went into the dumpster.

Look, there’s a LOT of stuff in your home that people may need. Why hang on to it if you’re not using it anymore? Toss it and make someone happy. Anyway that’s MY take. ;)

Waaaaaaa! A nineteen year old man who has enough computer skills to get a job that could give him money for an apartment while he’s at school, or even a dorm room, but he isn’t doing it. Why? Not because his mother (that evil being who raised him by herself and then encouraged him to go to Peru with a woman who loved him) insists that he live in the same house with her. But because… because…. there is no reason why he isn’t getting a job to go live on his own. There are no apron strings tying him to her, unless they exist in his head…

Wake up Irma, don’t burn your bridges. Remember Gunther sacrificed college to follow Rosa to Peru. Then she cut him off, and cut him loose with a little peck on the cheek. I fear that your own Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are about to thunder into your quiet world. Doom is on the horizon. Gunther, go shack up with Tiffany, and hide from the coming disaster.

The sentiments each of us place on items is very individualized and personal. That is what makes clutter so damn easy to acquire. I think the ethos expressed here today (Irma keeping some momentos that make her feel good… and Gunther keeping some momentos that make him feel good…. all logical and easy to understand. And parting with momentos is often damn hard as well.

So, sincerely…. a well done comic today with a quite realistic story line by Greg.

But…. for me, I do not like today’s effort much because it stirs up those very difficult emotions, which do not enrich my day.

One other, minor thing…. GoComics Head Honchos: What pray-tell are the supposed “improvements” in this new rendering? It seems to add nothing of value to the reader/commenter (and this is looking both on a phone and on a PC). The new font chosen does not seem to improve readability. The splitting of the screens seems to only make the comic smaller and more difficult to read on the PC and seems to have done nothing for the phone look.

It seems your new “cherry” look…. is mostly just messing around to mess around…. and is akin to what the grocery stores do more and more…. move every damn thing around to just have us linger around longer. I suppose this might get the people who see ads to have to hit more buttons and what not to find the comics they are looking for, so I guess that must be your real motivation…. not improvement…. except to elicit more damn hits on ads?

⇧ i’m curious how “individualized” (which i’m not even sure is a real word…) is different from “personal,” other than having more syllables. that, and how somebody can be such an insufferable gasbag…
