Trivia which I have not double checked: I once read that Bayer concocted it and gave it the trademarked name “Aspirin.” After a number of years and failure to protect the name, “aspirin” was used by many companies.
None of the other pain relief products – ibuprofen, etc. – come near aspirin’s ability to reduce fever and inflammation. You need to keep both in hand.
Also, if you ever get shingles, crush a plain aspirin to powder, mix it with a good quality hand lotion, and rub the paste on the blisters. The aspirin reduces the inflammation, and the lotion carried it to the nerve endings. (Obviously, disregard this if you are allergic to aspirin.)
Dr. Faustmann at Harvard is running a study on treating type 1 diabetes with tuberculosis vaccine doses—which are old, generic, (were) cheap, and best of all quite effective for many. Using it to treat other autoimmune diseases is next on their list. That work threatens to end the vast profits on just this one disease, and suddenly tuberculosis vaccines are costing thousands. Once we throw the moneychangers out of the Congressional temple we can finally legislate some sense into this obscene gouging.
Well, if it were invented today, it would be a new painkiller under a fresh patent, and requiring a prescription, just as it was when it was actually developed. So yes, that sounds reasonable.
