Nancy is having a whale of a time. Nancy has a date with Jonah. Nancy is not allowed to say “sperm whale.” Nancy stars in the new movie Whalenado. Nancy considers the connection between the natural world and auto design. Nancy doesn’t have much to do on a Saturday.
The “mechanics” of a Bushmiller comic strip are always fascinating. I think this would be more involving if all the text… the signs and the speech balloon… were missing. A silent feature, so to speak.
But part of the beauty of his Nancy is that the strip can be taken in and understood and reacted to in a split second, in a flash. In this case, the text does the thinking for you so you don’t have to stop and do that.
Art Spiegelman made what I think is one of the profound observations about Bushmiller’s achievement… that it is easier to read “Nancy” than not to read “Nancy.”

One of these is a large thing out of place on dry land.
The other, of course, is a whale. ;-)

Nancy sure spends a lot of time in museums and zoos. I suppose that I should be glad that she has such an interest in history and nature.
Or she just has a lot of time to kill.
