The boy I believe is Boog Skinner; he ought to be 16 by now. I am not 100% sure about the girl, but I will hazard that it is Aubee Rose Skinner, Boog’s sister; she should be four years old; it must be her. Both have September birthdays. I agree: a lovely tableau!

In his diary, JQA had a period after “rays”—but also after “birth,” where above it the tail of the “z” in “blaze” might make the period look like an exclamation point. He also spelled the one word “empirean,” with a period after “hearth” too. The most important spelling comes with his “unobscurable,” which has no hyphen and includes a “c” (http://www.masshist.org/jqadiaries/php/doc?id=jqad45_540 and the page before too). Many thanks to Mr. Carroll for digging this out! Marvelous research!

Yes! Named after the great John Philip Sousa (who had it first made just as he wanted, bell facing up), first built by J. W. Pepper of Phila. Later, C. G. Conn made a bell-forward version, which is drawn here. There is a photo of Harding with a Sousaphone (bell forward) wrapped around him, which I’m sure Mr. Carroll knows.
