They were, but most of the canneries are now automated.

If I didn’t know better, I’d say that Calvin was talking to his father rather than Hobbes.;-D

Looking at the clothes Mom is putting away, I think Calvin has 10 of the same shirts.

Don’t be silly Calvin. Child labor laws say that you can only be forced to work eight hours in the cannery.

I live in Monterey, our canneries burned down years ago. Nothing on Cannery Row now but tourists, and me on the w/e’s I like to ride my bike down there and people watch. Interesting critters! AU -

You could always get a job in the cannery back home. Fifty cents an hour. Interesting times. No seven year olds, but a lot of teenagers back in the 1940s.

I remember when my sister and I ganged up on my brother and nearly convinced him he had been adopted. The joke was he was older than both of us, and remembered us being born!

This was changed in The Complete Calvin and Hobbes. “Mom, was I genetically engineered or cloned?”

No canneries left in North America. All that stuff is done on the ship in the South China sea.

So Hobbes has been feeding Calvin fake news. And even has the conspiracy angle figured out to cover it!

@snakemama — and from reading history. child labor isn’t that far back in the U.S. and Euro past and still exists, unfortunately. probably some materials in your (and my) electronics and clothing obtained with child labor.

Hobbes does have a point. Only a little kid would take his mother at her word on a matter like this.

Why yes, you were adopted. Twice, in fact, but the people brought you back both times.
