Luddite here. And let me point out something no one else above has mentioned. I have a FIOS landline. When power goes out, my battery backup lasts about 3-4 hours. Then my phone goes out too. I simply do not want to be reachable, or locatable, 24/7. Privacy is worth a little inconvenience.
Loved the old rotary phones. Had a special “dialer” tool that was just smart looking when used. Miss the old hand set as well. Hate, just hate the new phone shapes. Ugh
I kept my landline for a long time after getting my cell phone, but hardly ever used it. On the rare occasions when I did try to use the old phone, it would be dead, no dial tone. I’d have to use the cell to call the phone company to complain. After several months and the scenario repeating 3-4 times, I decided there was no advantage for me to pay for such a “service.”
Recently saw a catalog from a “country store” in Vermont which offered replicas of dial phones, princess phones and even the old candlestick phones — for those whol enjoy being able to hang up on an annoying caller with old fashioned emphasis, or who are just sentimental.
I suppose it was inevitable. Today’s Bloom County cannot be stuck back in the 1980’s forever. The old style phone went into the trash along with the Banana Jr. computer, the wooden box TV, and the Ronco Turnip Twaddler. Of course, mentioning the Lion King means that Bloom County is still stuck in the 1990’s for the moment. I suppose when they come for Opus’ flowered ottoman that he’ll have lost everything that matters.

I have a cell and a landline. When the sun’s emissions finally knock out the satellites, I’ll still be able to order pizza!

We had one when I was a kid in the 50’s. Kids and party lines are not always a good pairing.

After Katrina, land lines were down. A company I worked for at the time had then installed satellite internet service as a backup.
