The first time I sunbathed naked on the roof of Toronto’s Rochdale College in 1970 I felt that solidarity with everything that was, is and ever will be. I had no idea shedding my clothes could lead to such an incredible feeling of peace. Rochdale was a unique experiment in alternate education. There were no teachers. We were called to be our own teacher. As part of the experiment the government allowed within its walls the use of hashish, LSD, marijuana, mescaline and peyote. Rochdale was 18 floors straight up in the heart of downtown Toronto. I like to say the higher up we went, the higher we got. No drugs that moment however. Just myself and eternity. I learned that when we sunbathe naked the winds wipes the perspiration from our bodies. Strangely enough it was the police in the most out of touch city on earth, Hollywood, that alerted me to the value of Rochdale. I returned to Toronto to become Rochdale’s Director of Cinema Studies. If you have yet to experience it I urge to follow the example set here. I never cared for the drugs. I do care for the idea of being our own teacher.We don’t need drugs to do that. You don’t need Rochdale to do that. Be your own teacher.
