A woman I knew back in college had arranged a five-year plan with a guy she’d broken up with years ago. Every five years, on the anniversary of a particular event for the two of them, they would meet at a particular place, No Matter What.

If they were both single, they’d consider starting things back up for a while. If one or the other was in a relationship, they’d go for coffee and catch up with one another’s last five years, then go their separate ways for another five.

I have no idea what happened. Haven’t been in touch with the lady myself for several decades.

I think Q and Lu are being quite mature about this. Maybe they’ll get back together later, when they’ve both had time to establish parts of their lives that need to take priority right now. No shame in that.

Over at Arca Max they were arguing that it was unrealistic for these 2 to be able to have a civil conversation. I have never understood why people have to hate each other after a breakup.

The fat lady hasn’t sung yet in this relationship. They’re not having a civil conversation, they’re flirting. This is playful banter leading to them getting back together.

Uhhhh, What She MEANT Was, Too Much “You” and Not Enough “HER,” Pretty-Boy, and THAT Ain’t Gonna Change. EVER.

So You Two can START “Avoiding” Each Now, Like MOST of the Couples that have Broken in the World Do.

    So Start “Avoiding.”

    Are You “Avoiding??”

    We’ll WAIT……,

There is reason to avoid each other. They both know the reason for the break up is the lack of time available for each other. That is a good reason to break up, but it isn’t a good reason to not see each other even in passing by.

Just sticking around to chat a little has already made matters healthier and a lot less “weird” between them, but a feeling of guardedness around an ex doesn’t ever go away entirely, in my experience.

Just maybe if Quill was getting some he would have made the relationship more of a priority. I suppose on some planets casual sex leads to relationship commitment and emotional intimacy. Let us know how that works out.

My aunt and uncle with the strongest and happiest marriage did not meet until both were at ages where a number of compatriots with far less happy marriages had been together for many decades. They realized they fit and soon wound up marrying at the age of 40 for her and 50 for him. They were married for 46 years. Yes, there were those around them who thought they were failures for not marrying sooner, but luckily neither of them accepted that definition. If that had happened they never would have even tried. They became an example for me, and their marriage provided examples for both of us. Obviously, they were not failures. Did they have relationships that failed before they met? Well, it is also obvious that there were strings of those, but those were like practice session to learn from or as Jim says they were like tryouts.

(That is just a different way of saying the same thing, of course.). A lot of what seems weird at first turn out to be treasures – not all, of course, but more than enough to realize that life is learning and learning is life.

at first I was thinking of Luann’s remark (about work) in the broad sense, i.e. that if maintaining a relationship with someone you love seems like too much work, then something is wrong. But now I think she was probably just referring (once again) to Quill’s work and his devotion to it, not the work of maintaining a relationship……… though they could be seen as related.

@ Ken H , your words are sagacious, “This banter means the game is still on.” Yup. I’d like to see them get back on that couch & turn up the heat a bit. There are a lot of fun ‘places’ you can go without risking pregnancy; wouldn’t it be a ground breaker to see them go there (offstage of course); have fun, and not go all the way…. How radical! … Witnessed by a bazillion Luann fans, young and old. Or, she could get with Emo art class boy (a diamond in the rough), that’d be interesting too.
