Stone Soup by Jan Eliot for April 03, 2016
Transcript:
Stone Soup by Jan Eliot Wally: Done with your taxes, Phil? Phil: Almost. Phil: We're filing jointly, and Val's record-keeping is a little...disjointed. Wally: Be thankful you married the ORGANIZED sister. When I married Joan, she hadn't used a check register in YEARS. Wally: It's a single mom thing. They can barely keep up. Phil: So we pull them out of debt and chaos. Wally: It's one of the gifts we give to the family we married into. Phil: Wow. We're pretty cool! Wally: Broke, but cool.

I think it’s a Joan thing, not a single mom thing.

With Direct-Deposit and auto-payments for everything else, I have stopped writing paper checks to anyone. So I have gotten out of the habit of documenting the register and balancing the checkbook every month.

My wife is sort of like that. I’m always asking her for receipts and filing everything, making sure the check register balances, that we have documentation for our tax deductions, etc. We just got a “Audit by Mail” request from the IRS. I told her that I’ll dig out the files from that year, copy the documentation they’re requesting and mail them a nice FAT envelope. She said “Thank you for being anal”.

Given the number of automatic deposits and withdrawals most people have today, check registers are woefully inadequate. It takes computer software to keep track of all the upcoming automatic transactions.

Between Quicken and Turbo Tax, we (Hubby, that is) had our taxes done by February 15. We still do write some checks – church, etc. – but mostly automatic withdrawals and PayPal.
