All three of the major newspapers in my area have shrunk in size , but ballooned in cost. It’s not like they’re made of gold …..

One boon about today’s digital media/TV and it’s advantage over print: You can hear it, take it on the go and as Argy mentioned, you don’t always have to worry about the size…usually. – One bane about digital media/TV? Now it’s on 24 hours a day, and people can’t seem to “unplug” once they’ve “connected” to it… – At least with newspapers, you can put it down and “detach” from the news for a while….

Instead of shrinking the Sunday (Saturday) comics page, the Vancouver Sun shrank the newspaper to fit the comics page!

I gave up on the print paper when the Sunday paper felt more like the Wednesday paper with its ads than the rich full Sunday paper you could sit and relax reading all afternoon. That and all the references -“For more details go to so and so blog”. If I wanted to read a blog I would have gone there! I wanted to read the news

When my once-respected local favorite newspaper shrank from an eight-column broadsheet to a six-column tabloid, and the number of pages was slashed by at least 50% while the per-copy cost rose to a new high (because of the sharp and continuing drop in ad revenue), I stopped buying a print version. I haven’t bought a print newspaper in more than five years, instead reading online, from a variety of sources, including the digital version of the enfeebled newspaper I used to buy—it has also dramatically slashed its editorial-side staff, dropping all national and foreign correspondents and bureaus, becoming little more than a local paper, and not very thorough at that either. Its editorial stance has also changed, IMO for the worse. The circulation numbers are also plummeting…. How long can this go on?

It’s a great idea for wrapping paper. I wrapped the larger presents one year in comics, and they spent more time reading the comics then admiring their presents.

If we move to another state,(likely) we will have our newspaper surface mailed. It is a great paper. Best sports section which covers all teams, not just local teams. Comics is still 4 pages, tho no Luann. Costs a lot, yeah, but worth it.

I know newspapers are strapped, but just too many readers enjoy the Sunday funny papers. Then what they do print are just a lot of politically correct and silly nonsense. Bring back some of the old good stuff on more than two pages you idiots!

Frank’s shirt reminds me of the Benny Hill show. Sometimes Benny would wear a shirt, tie and jacket all of the exact same pattern. Usually quite loud and always amusing.

Sunday comics pages used to be so large, the major players(ie Orphan Annie, Smokey Stover, JorPaloka, etc) had an extra mstrip above the main stipmcalled a “Topper”. Usually a character from the main strip in a short gag.No more……

I still get the news paper mainly to support our comic artists. I use GoComics only for ones not in the paper. It’s silly but I feel like I’m cheating if I read the free version when the paid version (that supports the artists) is available.

back in ancient days, when I was working on my Bachelor’s in Physics, we had a joke amongst our group about the difference between Physicists and Engineers.

I am reminded of one of my famous “3 people” jokes about “engineers.” Sorry for the length.

An engineer, a business exec., and a Mathematician are all sleeping in a hotel. The Engineer wakes up and smells smoke. “OMG there’s a fire! What will I do? I know, I’ll take the ice bucket, fill it with water and keep dousing out the flames, etc.etc…”

Meanwhile, the business exec also wakes up and smells smoke. “OMG There’s a fire! What shoud I do? I know, I’ll call the Fire Dept. and let them handle it!”

Finally, the Mathematician wakes up and smells smoke. “OMG There’s a fire! What will I do? I’m smart guy. I can think of something.”

So he sits on the bed thinking…. 15 minutes later he says, “OK, I thought of it…” and goes back to sleep! ;-PPP

Decades ago, Garry Trudeau protested about his “Doonesbury” being too small, and, I believe, he made it mandatory that if a paper wanted to carry it, the strip had to be printed full size.Like most things today, companies make things smaller to save money. Mostly, I bewail the introduction of compact discs, because that spelled the end of Album COVER ART. (I still have about 300 LP’s from the sixties & early seventies, and still gaze at the covers of Sgt Pepper, Their Satanic Majesties, Surrealistic Pillow and lots of others!)
