Poe had a hard life and lost a lot of people dear to him, but he was brilliant. He was unfortunate to have one of his worst enemies, Rufus Griswold, be the first to write his biography after his passing. It was Poe who wrote the first modern detective story with Murders at the Rue Morgue in 1841, and the Mystery Writers of America annually grant the Edgar Awards, named of course, after Edgar Allan Poe, complete with little statuettes with a caricature of Poe.
Today, Jean Jaurès would definitely be on my list… the only man in Europe who spoke out loud for peace in 1914 was assassinated exactly a hundred years ago today.
Moses, Jesus, and Mohammad (though Moses did not really exist, Jesus probably not, and even Mohammad is a bit questionable), to be able to explain to them the glories of science and how to understand the world as it really is. And to give them the chance to recant their teachings and all the harm they’ve done in the world. I’d give them each a copy of Carl Sagan’s book The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark, and pay for the dinner as well!
