How can a 7 or 8-year-old child be “weird” when talking about his/her favorite stuffie? If this policeman doesn’t have children of his own, he also obviously doesn’t have young nieces or nephews either… ;)

At least, none with a hyperactive imagination working overtime at warp speed!

“How can a 7 or 8-year-old child be “weird” when talking about his/her favorite stuffie?” Well, he’s not 2-3 year old child, at his age he should read and write, etc. and know that hobbes is a toy, not a real animal (not to mention that even real animals cannot look at mug shots and recognize the suspects)…

If you read the blurb to the right, describing the strip, you will see that Calvin is meant to be 6…

in fact in early strips I believe he’s only 5.

Some of the humor derives from his reluctance to be dragged from a toddler’s world of imagination and play to a school child’s life of facts, rigidity and confinement.

So yeah, he hangs on to his little-boy faith in Hobbes….. cos without that tiger as a bridge to his days of freedom, he’d have to grow up.

If Watterson had stuck around till Calvin fully accepted that Hobbes was inanimate, and couldn’t scare off a burglar or recognise a mug shot, at that moment, the strip would have been over anyway.

There have been a lot of close calls in Calvin and Hobbes. Just three years earlier, Susie narrowly escaped the mandibles of death:Click here: Calvin and Hobbes (October 5, 1986)

Hey, he’s a kid. That’s what they do. Now if Dad were talking about mandibles of death…

What six-year-old isn’t a “weirdo?” That’s an age where most kids still haven’t had their imagination suppressed by adults who’ve forgotten what it was like to really think outside the box.

Calvin’s description of Hobbes in today’s strip reminds me of the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz singing “If I Were King of the Forest.”Click here: The Wizard of Oz

Yes officer, I do have the serial number of my television. It’s something I keep handy just in case I’ll ever need it.

crabman95965 said: “You people have too much time on your hands.”Well, crabman, in some cases you are probably correct. But is having too much time on your hands necessarily a bad thing? There is more to life than not having enough time on your hands. We have to be able and willing to spend the time, if we want to discover some of life’s true pleasures.

Hobbs was hiding under the blankets on Calvin’s bed. Does that make him a scaredy cat?

Either I am actually 6 years old or I am a weirdo. I have no problem seeing the world from Calvin’s point of view.

I think real animals could look at mug shots and recognize people, but can’t see why they would want to or how they would tell who the burglar was.
