Here we are Mr. and Ms First-Nighter arriving at the Pirate Soiree. But first the obligatory pirate selfie.

And now… The Surprise TTFT.

Unrealistic expectations.

Betts should get a surprise – it is called getting dumped! She doesn’t look like a pirate- except for be bowleggedness…

These are not the costumes in the pictures Bets handed to Gunther.

Of course Bets is driving.

Whew! I thought this arc was gonna be gone for weeks!

Welp, good old Gunth made the costumes. So what’s in it for him?

It will be interesting to see Bets’ face when she sees the ‘surprise’ that Tiffany has planned, which is probably NOT a pirate themed meal. It’s also kind of sad that, for all the years that Gunther has known Tiffany, this is the first time he’s seen her house…

I think it is going to look a lot different than what Betts is thinking, and I don’t think she will be happy.

Uh-oh, trouble brewing.

I really think that Gunther has to get to the point where he just says no to her social media addiction. It just isn’t him. Sure he does need to get out of his shell a bit but Bets is just too much

Betts seems happy with the costumes although they are far from what she had planned.

I think Bets is probably in for a surprise as she and gun are dressed as pirates for a “themed-dinner” but Tiffany wants “tres elegant.” So the place will likely look like a 5-star french restaurant, not a pirates cove.

Seeing what Bets envisioned, I get the feeling Tiff is going to disappoint her big time.

Gunther, it’s time to have a talk with Bets about the selfies. . .

I addition to the obvious tres elegant dinner Bets did not order, Tiffany’s plan could fall apart because TJ and Leslie failed to show up and Tiffany has to be chef, waiter and hostess (I think they did something like that on Fawlty Towers) and Poppa Tom comes unexpectedly home to find pirates invading his house. But this is Luann so it will be something lame.

Wow, you made those costumes or did you sneak into a costume store? And I have the feeling Tiff will collapse Bets’ vision of their experience.

Is Bets the creator of the decor? Or Tiffany?

Surprise? Just look at that tablecloth, might we see a game of strip checkers?

Gunther is a rigid personality shaped by his mother, Irma and Bets has a rigid self entitled lifestyle. Rosa had a rigid dream to serve. Gunther and Bets are a couple.

I have a feeling Tiffany’s surprise is going to cost over the $300 budget.

Tiff had to economize so she is serving “Pirate Corn”, it was only a buck an ear…

So, the fact that this is a social media event begins to unfold. I wonder how Tiff will feel about the pics being used for social media.

Dez had limited garden vegetables. What will dinner be like.

I knew he’d cave in and sew the costumes. Grow a spine, Gunther!

I can tell by Bets’ fantasy that that is NOT how the room is gonna look.

They will be surprised when they are let in. Tiff will take them up the stairs to the poop deck and there will be two porta – potties to sit on with a barrel for a table. Wait ‘till Bets lifts the lid on her porta – potty and sees the Captain’s log.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Tiffany picked up a Pirate theme party decor kit from Party City store – average cost $20 – 100, depending on the theme. Made of vinyl and paper, mostly. The skeleton might be a Halloween paper version that glows in dark. I believe their main diet was fish while on sea voyages but when they docked, they went to taverns where meat and beer were served. If the decor implies they are at sea, then I predict Tiff will serve fish – mussels, oysters, shrimps – nothing exotic like shark fin – and some of Dez’s vegetables. Their beer will be root beer. They would have gone to a Medieval Castle for a thematic event of jousting while eating meat legs barehanded, drinking real beer, etc. My nephew had a birthday party there recently. Way better than this cheapo version at Tiff’s McMansion. But it is set up for a table for two so Bets gets her privacy and romance.

Betts is getting bossier over time.

Irma, Gunther’s Mother and Bets have similar personality. Gunther should have stayed with Bernice.

First step to disappointment….

For a week long conflict between Bets and Tiffany, tomorrow we see the no cellphone sign just inside the front door.

After all, when you have an elegant restaurant, rarely is the patron asked if they want white or red wine with their Pokemon Go.

Gunther shows some interest and excitement when he sees Tiffany’s house, not do much when Bets wants him to pose for the"fans". Just look at the look on Gunther’s face in the last panel.

I too can’t wait to see the surprise in their faces. Bets think they are entering a pirate lair and Tiffany has probably created the most romantic/classic/luxurious and intimate atmosphere for them. I just hope to see a huge argument between Bets and Tiffany, perhaps a fight. And I want to see what Gunther will do, which side will he stay on. To be honest, as much as I like Gunther and Bets as a couple, I really hope this dinner ends with Gunther and Tiffany ♡.

I still hate how Bets talked Gunther into this date even though he had schoolwork to take care of.

Oh, there’s gonna be a surprise, all right…

I think Bets is in for a major letdown. And the beginning of the end is coming.

Somehow I don’t think the decorations will look like that.

I get a strong feeling that the surprise is actually on Bets herself.

Difficult to be “in the moment” when she’s fixated on documenting every moment.

Why do I get the feeling that things won’t be quite as elaborate as Bets imagines?

Sewing two complete costumes from scratch… That was fast! Way too fast, even… How long was that, like a week? The only way that could really be accomplished is if Gunther had been sewing all day every day… Between the planning, buying the material, fittings, etc.… Just one week for one person to get all that done… that’s crazy.

A little bossy for me

This can still turn out well for both Bets and Tiffany if their video goes viral. This all started as a project for a class in Marketing, after all.

They walk into the house and nothing is decorated. Tiffany escorts them to the back yard and there is a pirate ship (boat/raft) in the pool. You walk the plank (diving board) to come aboard. So much fun!

tomorrow: the big reveal!

Thinking for a moment (out of the box) we’re about to see a surprise and the initial surprise will be Bets when it’s not to her “grand idea” and then gets in Tiffany’s face. The real surprise will be Gunther appreciates what Tiffany’s done and defends her to Bets potentially upsetting the Gunther/Bets relationship. Could be interesting if that occurs. Entirely possible since Gunther’s been good to Tiffany in the past and they showed some good potential for a relationship back when Tiffany was hiding in her dorm room.

Seriously, after all these years, Gunther has never been to Tiffany’s house?

Maybe Gunther likes Tiffany’s house enough to dump Bets.

The dream bubble leads me to believe that what Bet’s wanted, isn’t going to be close to what Bet’s gets. Tiffany, since she doesn’t listen to people, will put her usual upscale society twist on everything causing a major flop.

Bets is VERY controlling and extremely narcissistic. All she cares about is HER fans. The sooner Gunn walks away, the better for him.

The big surprise here would be if she actually thought of someone other than herself. Gunther shoulddump her for someone who doesnt need validation for everything she does.

Gunther and bets need to break up

Seems rather odd to me that Gunther has known Tiffany since high school, but he has never seen her house? I mean yeah they move in very different circles, but..

I am sure Bets will be as surprised as Gunther.

If Greg is showing a picture of a plan, then you know it will end up being the opposite, a source of disappointment, and future conflict. By the end of the week look for drama on asking for a refund.

Please Gunther dump her! She is more interested in her audience than you!

Bets and Tiffany will get in a huge fight over the decor and Gunther will have to pick which woman to side with. I think he will pick Tiffany and dump Bets after he sees how awful Bets treats other people.

Gunther’s outfit has way more detail than Bets’.

So, Bets is probably going to be shocked and upset that dinner didn’t meet expectations and that will be the plot for the week. But, will the videoed disaster go viral and save the day?

The upcoming disaster we-the-chattering-class see coming could be recovered from, if Tiff thinks fast and says “Pirates took over formal dinners at the captain’s table on ships all the time…just trying to make it realistic.”

Of course, (a) Tiff would have to recognize a problem and (b) Bets would have to buy that after she explicitly said it was her $300 and the theme would be pirates, so I’m sitting back and expecting the disaster.

I hope Tiff was paid upfront!

Technically it’s her dad’s house, not Tiffany’s.

She is obnoxious, unappealing, and uninteresting as a character. Who are her “fans” supposed to be? Geez, are there really people who have less interesting things to do than I do?

Yeah. Those two have “fans”.

Some women like to be the driver and steer where they want them to go. Long as the man like’s tagging along for the ride it’s a win-win for both. I don’t mind that at all. Been driving all these years. All I can say is be the driver for as long as you want.

I am a bit disappointed that Gunther actually did apparently sew those costumes “toot sweet” per the dictates of Bets. I am hoping that the sew job did not come at the expense of his grades.

That said, I think Gunther’s costume is a bit nicer than is Bets. Bets costume looks ok, but not overly noteworthy. Maybe Gunther devoted more of the limited time he had to his own costume?

Bets imagination of the work she is expecting Tiffany to do for this meal is pretty damn elaborate. Let us NOT forget…. $300 or no…. this is actually an assignment for Tiffany’s school work. If Tiffany has decided to go with “French Elegance” and not some sort of “pirate” theme…. I sure as hell hope Bets and Gun just roll with it and enjoy what Tiffany provides.

…but

I doubt that will happen.

What will happen? Who knows, but here are some ideas I have:

1. Bets will be angry and will actually treat Tiffany like a “hired hand” or some such thing…. similar to the way Annie did.

2. “Gun” will initially be very uncomfortable and indecisive during this “argument” (I resisted calling it a “Tiff” out of respect for Tiffany).

3. If Tiffany gets upset enough that there are water works, I suspect this get “Gun” riled up enough that he confronts Bets about the argument.

4. This makes Bets even more upset, and so she is now arguing with both Tiff and Gun.

5. Wednesday may be a scene of TJ, Ox, and perhaps even Les watching the goings-on from the safety of the kitchen….. since Wednesdays often seem to be days of stasis where there is no plot movement.

I want to see Bets’ face when Tiffany’s realization doesn’t match Bets’ imagination.

Foreshadowing

The social media thing will be an issue, but remember social media use is common in her generation, and can be very remunerative, which I think is a motive. But to me the real surprise should come if Tiffany does the Paris fashion model motif and not the pirate agreed upon. No matter how much the trolls here want it though, I don’t think this is a break-up arc. There will be a day, but not this week.

Lookit Bets – She’s having FUN!

As soon as I saw him in that pirate costume, I decided I’m done caring about “Gun” and his woes. At some point he’ll “blow up” during all this, but I can’t dredge up a single F to give, because shortly afterward I know he’ll be back to his normal walk-all-over-me self.

Time to dump the broad…

Bets is in for a BIG surprise.

Or her face when she sees that Tiffany blew the Pirate Theme and decorated with left over Hallween decorations.

Late in the day to make a comment but any chance Tif is a baseball fan and the place will be decorated with willie Stargell memorabilia?

Since Tiffany can’t cook they should have a very interesting dinner.

If that’s the decor she expects for just $300, she’s got another think coming. The food and wine cost is probably around $100 (most of it the wine and because Tif can’t get any real discount doing one-off meals), then the labor for the cook and any servers. A business has to make a profit or it won’t be a business for long. Hope she plans to tip.

An interesting possible “romantic triangle” in the making, with bossy Bets, daughter of privilege Tiffany, and meek boytoy Gunther all on the turntable….

Bets is delusional. She actually thinks $300 gets her an exclusive dinner, waitstaff and props.
