Besides, surely Spud’s been sent here to check for universal translators often enough that he already knows they probably aren’t in stock anyway, and so why not make the trip worth his time?
I remember the jars of penny candy. Now, everything has to be wrapped. I doubt anyone sells penny candy anymore. Candy bars were a nickle. I remember the pharmacy had hot nuts they sold by the ounce. They also had a sit down fountain. Best drinks ever!
This general store is so great. It reminds me of the one on the way to our old cottage in the Algonquin Park area. Anything and everything from gas for the boat motor to cheap sunglasses (sorry ZZ Top) to the weirdest candy you never saw anywhere else. I can almost smell the wooden planks and the gas cans.
Since there are no Universal Translators anywhere in that store, what difference is it to Ms. Nosey where Spuddy Boy chooses to loiter for an appropriate amount of time before returning and delivering the bad news to Wallace?
And did she just take a five finger discount on a lollipop? It’s traditional to pay first before enjoying. Even in olde timey general stores.

I’m still giggling over yesterday’s strip. Spud recovered quickly.

I just noticed Spud’s ears. Kinda low on his head. But cute.

Interesting that Spud was sent on this mission, because he reminds me of a Na’vi from Pandora… minus the height, of course!

Just read a WSJ piece on the value of nostalgia and then this strip brought back memories of long gone local markets. Good timing. Thanks, Will.

Probably a good idea to stock up – many of Wallace’s adventures involve waiting for something and a little pick me up might be juuuust the thing. :-)
