I remember when I was a kid in the ‘90s I’d listen to the radio to find out whether school was closed. Seems weird thinking back on it, but this was before school districts had websites, and the TV was on the other end of the house, so I’d need to get up to check that way. There was probably a number you could call, but I don’t think anyone in my house knew it.
Of course it was rare that a closure would be decided upon the night before, so I’d have to set my alarm and wake up at the same time regardless; unlike Nancy though if the news was good I’d usually go back to sleep.
One early morning one of my parents (I can’t recall, but I have an inkling it was my mom) got the news school was closed and shut off my alarm before it could go off. This kind gesture gave me a panic attack however when I finally did wake up and thought I’d missed the school bus.
I never got to experience a real snow day. We had to get up at 0h Dark Dreadful for Martial Arts Practice One, a light something to eat followed by weight training for strength, and by the time I was 10 a round of Iaido for dexterity and control. If school was closed, we had already been up a couple of hours by then. If the Dojo was closed for snow, we were expected to practice at home. Not complaining. There was always a sense of satisfaction in achievement, and we were the original Junior Overachievers. But it would have been nice, once in a while, to start your morning with nothing more serious than Inspector Gadget.
Nancy may as well not even be published. I check it from time to time to see if it’s gotten any better. It has not, in fact it’s gotten worse. I’d much rather see old strips rerun again.
