Well, no, the closest we get is to have pre-selected electors decide for us who they want our President to be. General elections are only a game they let us play.
That “freedom” to choose has a lot of restrictions.. I.. can choose to go to Cuba for a holiday.. not so easy for Americans.. just to point out one “freedom”
They do get to vote (assuming they aren’t from one of the “black” districts in states where the folks in charge seem to be adept at losing mail-in ballots, including those from the military), but astoundingly many of them voted for the current mistake. I’ll be interested to see how that demographic votes in ’20.
The Military is not a democracy. It is an arm of the autocratic Commander In Chief. Granted, said “Commander” is supposed to get the advice and consent of Congress prior to sending our military to war, but that is, nor has it been the reality for some time. Since Congress cannot seem to prevent the POTUS from acting on his own, it falls to the Secretary of Defense, then to The Commanders of the Combatant Commands, as proscribed in the Goldwater – Nichols Act of 1986. That act relegated the Joint Chiefs of Staff to mere advisors, but don’t sell the Combatant Commanders short. Each of the 10 Combatant Commanders holds the rank of Four-Star General, or Admiral.
When commands are given, they must be followed by each Officer down the line of command, ending with the grunt. You don’t get to “chose”. Obey, or pay the consequences.
The greatest question has yet to be answered. Is there a Commander alive who would willingly disobey an order given by the Commander in Chief?

Well, since the “homeland” is only under attack from Moscow, you may be headed in the wrong direction.
I really hope that if the military is ordered to attack Iran, they resign en masse.

On this weekend it’s good to remember the 6,828 American troops that needlessly died in Iraq and Afghanistan.
