Whoa, now THERE’S a story problem. Given that statistic, how many storage joints per state? Quickly now…

“A Christmas Carol” is a ghost story. FOUR ghosts visited Ebenezer Scrooge. Most people forget the ghost of Jacob Marley, the deceased business partner.

Every store that closes seems to spring up a storage building.

An old friend used to bury his guns and ammo in the back yard.

Come to think of it, he’s dead. Time to rent a metal detector.

So, that TV program about bidding on storage units that have been foreclosed might have a very long life. That’s as scary as Fox News.

It’s a great business. You need two employees, and the renters do everything themselves.

That is actually one of our potential retirement income ideas when my husband gets too old to work his current job. I don’t see the need for self storage going away any time soon.

The problem with renting a storage unit is that inertia, combined with the acquisitiveness that made you need the unit in the first place, conspire against your ever clearing the thing out.

I have a friend who picks up a little income as a decluttering consultant. Sometimes all it takes is a neutral voice saying things like “How long since you used that? Realistically, are you ever going to use it again?” to get Stuff moving out of the house and to Goodwill, or Freecycle, or the library, or the dump. She helped us clear out half our garage two summers ago.

Now, if the self-storage units were used to store selves, that would be creepy.

Just need to make sure the monthly rent does not exceed the value of the stuff you are storing, many times it’s just easier to buy new when needed.

1 for every 5500 people (assuming a U.S. population of 270 million) is not a scary proposition.
