Alice the Goon will be here soon
Slave rebellion saved the day.
Escaped from Plunder Island, she
And Popeye paved the way
For victory o’er the Sea Hag
The last Sorceress on Earth
Must listen very carefully
To discern her words of mirth.
J. Wimpy understands her well
Makes out what she does say
Gladly shall pay tomorrow
For a hamburger today.
To some she’s terrifying
As frightful as can be
Olive Oyl, she knows better
Trusts her with the babe, Swee’Pea.
Judge not by her appearance
The Giant known as Alice
She loves Swee’Pea, as all can see
Big hearted with no malice.
Good morning™, everyone!
Mr. Bribery is finally behind bars.
“Rocky” Fiegel of E.C. Segar’s hometown, Chester, Illinois, was the real-life person that inspired Popeye. He had a reputation for being extremely strong and he got into a lot of fights.
“In Chester, it is commonly accepted that Fiegel provided Segar with the basis for the character of Popeye. Although not a sailor, and more inclined inclined to guzzle liquor than spinach, Fiegel had the reputation of being as tough and as fearless as the cartoon character,” according to a 1979 article in the Southern Illinoisan newspaper.
Here is the most famous picture of “Rocky” and a close-up of the drawing on his tombstone that depicts how Popeye looked in the earliest comic strips he appeared in.
Alice the Goon was not based on a real person and was of undisclosed gender when introduced in the Popeye strip. She supposedly frightened a lot of child readers and later acquired the dress and the hat with a flower to look a bit less intimidating. Olive Oyl eventually hired her as a babysitter.
Note Sawtooth’s picture is in the paper that Sam is reading.
Alice the Goon looks pretty close to copyright infringement to me.
The latest Unofficial Crossover Story!™ ✨
Cute pic of Lizz. I need me one of those MCU mugs.
Please call me when it’s over…
And still no word about Ugly Crystal.
Well, this is just one man’s opinion, but we just wasted another Sunday on silliness. Excellent art, but the only thing useful is that we know now that Bribery is behind bars. I know, I know – Gould used to take time out for vacations and the like between stories too, but there was so much potential for this Sunday, with the new story brewing. Please, Mike, if you read these comments, I think it’s time to pull way back on all this crossover stuff. Thank you.
Ha! This was a pleasant calm, before the storm. I love seeing Bribery behind bars too.
Well, that was totally unexpected, Rocky Fiegel, cool!
Mr. Bribery looks like he wants to cry.
And when did Popeye change his name to Rocky?
Will we she Popeye and Olive Oil too?
I was going to say, where’s Olive?
First story panel – Yaaaaaaayyyyy!
We haven’t heard Tracy exclaim, “Ye Gods!” for quite some time.
He’s seen Pruneface, Pouch, Mole, Haf N Haf, and others but a Goon face startles him?
Here are the original Popeye crossover strips:
Noting that Dick Tracy appears “out of uniform”, not wearing the yellow trenchcoat or yellow hat. — I shall have to make a list of the occasions when Mysta Chimera is wearing something other than strapless black leotard, etc.
On the story going on, I wonder what the business dealings between Ghost and Simon are. Ghost wouldn’t have a successful eatery if he didn’t know that you don’t kill or ‘knock-out’ your customers. And Simon would know that you can’t continue a successful eatery without the continued services of a principal like Ghost. Somebody is going to come and ask Ghost about what happened to Simon, and Ghost has been in business long enough that he should know that.
Strong second to Ken in Ohio..Just when it looked like a new, potentially creative, good villain was going to take the stage we go bacvk to Thimble Theater. Geez, can we get a straight story once in a while
Well, today’s strip sure brought the narrative momentum to a dead stop.
This is ridiculous! Characters from other comic strips? Come on! Stick with an ‘original’ format. Be creative. Use Your ‘own’ characters.
I’m quite fond of the homages. Stop and smell the *#@+ing roses, you guys. Sheesh. It’s a comic strip. Where do you gotta be in sich a hurry"
Ye gods! What happened to Ghost and his trippy victim, Simon? I’m glad the MCU is getting a little downtime, and that Tracy has gone fishing with family in the North Woods. But what has Rocky Fiegel got to do with anything? Or is Alice the Goon going to play some part in a story barely begun but already dripping with crossovers? And what’s the (non-)story on Crystal (most people call her Ugly Crystal)?
Interesting to know Tracy trips on psychedelic drugs when he’s on vacation.
I wish King Features bought Tribune Content Agency.
Snow melted fast up in the North Woods.
Prediction: if King Features ever merges with Tribune, there’ll be a storyline in which The Great Am makes amends with a royal personification of King. The King characters will come out of the shadows to help save the day the very moment this happens – a literal deus ex machina, since the Great Am is implied to be Tribune Comics God.
