Remember when Ike built the transportation infrastructure? Remember when Teddy Roosevelt built the parks system? Remember when Republicans thought about what was best for the country instead of what was best for the richest people in the country?

If they’d been thinking that way, I truly think we would not have to remember 9/11 today.

“That there are men in all countries who get their living by war, and by keeping up the quarrels of nations, is as shocking as it is true; but when those who are concerned in the government of a country, make it their study to sow discord and cultivate predjudices between nations, it becomes the more unpardonable.” ― Thomas Paine, Rights Of Man

yes, one freedom fighter is way too many. as i have heard, what you reap is what you sow. funny how it’s 9-11 and America is still the most fascist country in the world and has been for years. but Americans are still asleep and the ride is so much “fun.” except for those who pay for teh Rich to screw us all.

i hope Doonesbury changes tack soon. i am so tired of freedom fighters, freedom fries and surrender monkeys. teh whole syntax, language and concepts are soo yesterday.

GT must be preparing his election week strips, as he will have to submit at least three story lines, one being a stalemate in the EC. The results Tuesday will determine Thursday on, for several days. The newspaper editors will have to pick the appropriate panel Tuesday and Wed.

Once upon a time, oh best beloved, when cartoonists wanted to take a break, they would prepare a body of fresh material in advance to run during their vacations. But, oh best beloved, that was long ago, in a time when we had not yet learned to swallow reruns without choking.

He sounded like Jean-François Revel, a French socialist writer who talks about one of the great unexplained phenomena of modern astronomy: namely, that the dark night of fascism is always descending in the United States and yet lands only in Europe.

Before going to sleep at night every American should fall to their knees and thank God they won the lottery of life by being a citizen this great country. The second thing they should do is get involved in the political process and get rid ofthe new world order crowd that have an agenda to ridthe country of any connection to God and religion inaddition to the great heritage left by our forefathers.

There are certain days in our lives that we will never forget. For those old enough, surely, Peal Harbor is indelibly etched in their minds. For others, like myself, it was the assassination of John F. Kennedy that seared the brain. For all of us alive today, those events of eleven years ago, today will forever remain in our collective conscious. No matter our political or religious beliefs, all of us recognize the horror and immorality of this horrendous act of cowardice against the American people. We also recognize the tremendous acts of selflessness, and heroism of those who responded to this tragedy. They showed what the American people are truly about.God Bless the United States !

I was standing on an el train platform in Brooklyn, on my way to work when the attacks happened. The guy standing next to me said, “a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center.” I turned around and saw smoke coming out.I worked in Midtown, far from lower Manhattan, so I went to work anyway. When I got to work I found out that both towers had crashed. From that subway platform, I can see WTC 1 going up.

algurka , thank you for your comment. Hyperbole is rampant now, witth "awesome’ applied to doughnuts or “fantastic” to a pleasant day at the beach; in politics, anyone to the speaker’s right is a fascist and to the left, a commy. Critical thinking and nuanced language appropriate to complicated problems could enable public discourse to be helpful in clarifying important issues—-but is often dismissed as nit-picking.

i don’t watch television but my then-tenant did, and he came over to tell me about it. “They got us,” he said, “they got us good.” My immediate thought was, “And now the Bush administration is going to use this as an excuse to do something absolutely horrible.” Such as destroy the Iraqi infrastructure and kill many hundreds of thousands of these people. Never waste a good excuse to casually invade and destroy another country. Never pass up an opportunity to play on the general racism and xenophobia of the USA’s populace. The 911 hijackers were basically a bunch of Saudis acting independently. This was no excuse for invading ANY country.

GT dealt with burn out by taking a sabbatical from January 1983 to October 1984. During that time he wrote a musical that was produced on Broadway.

Joe McCarthy was a Republican senator from Wisconsin. I can believe that Ann Coulter was persuaded that Joe was a Democrat, but he wasn’t. Ann’s grasp of American history is shaky at best. Years ago I saw her and Alan Dershowitz having an idiotic argument on tv over whether Alexander Hamilton was impeached. Alan did argue that Hamilton was never impeached, but both he and Ann thought Hamilton had been president of the US. Hey, Ann and Alan. You don’t have to be a dead president to have your picture on money. Ben Franklin and Sacagewea were never presidents either.

If you follow the history of it a bit, here’s the strange bit (as per someone outside it looking in, because I am not from the USA. Interest rates were dropped to encourage the economy and this lead to honeymoon interest rates so people could buy houses and stimulate the economy because it was feared that it could damage the stock market…This is all the more interesting because it did – about 7 years later when the honeymoon deals ended and people could no longer afford the payments.I always find that strangely ironic because that was what Bin Laden was trying to do in the first place, supposedly – to facilitate a financial collapse that he could benefit from financially.

And yet we would never accomplish anything without some variant of tribalism. How do you learn to form tribes and yet be flexible enough to work with many tribes while remaining one person? Because that’s what we need to be able to do.
