I remember the Polio shots back in the ‘50s. Not to be confused with Small Pox vaccination (Cow Pox) or the TB tests on the forearm. I receive a least one shot (Salk vaccine) at school and later orally on a sugar cube (Sabin vaccine) at some big room (high school gym?). As kids we knew we could get Polio from stagnate water _"don’t go near that. That’s POLIO water."_

Bird fetishes are about as rare as pet Birds of Paradise, so a correlation seems logical in some rarefied way….

I vaguely remember taking the Sabin vaccine when I was five, in 1960. My other memories of polio are equally vague: seeing a few people walking with braces and canes, and hearing about iron lungs.

as a child I had a slight case of polio in my left leg (they never figured out where I contracted it), and was later given both the vaccine shots, and then sugar cubes (and yes, in the gym with everyone else lined up for their dose). but then, I’m old enough to also remember having to stuff myself under my school desk at the sound of sirens.

Everybody’s heard about that bird.

I’m very picky about whom I allow to scratch and sniff my bird of paradise. … I guess they’re breaking up. So sad.

I can see the epithet “Go on to Dick’s Deli,” or “Get yourself to The Deli,” acquiring a meaning in this comment space … along the lines of (stuff) yourself.

Re: the magazine cover on the blog, it’s kind of chilling. And notable that the self-destructive arc of more than a few of the 60s greats was so apparent at the time. The tally (assist to Wikipedia): Of the 20 artists pictured, 4 (Morrison, Joplin, Hendrix and Presley) did not survive the 70s. John Lennon was shot in 1980. George Harrison passed on in 2001 and Johnny Cash in 2003. The rest, thankfully, are still with us. ranging in age from 67 to 78.

Blog‘STARS’: The sign says ‘Berliner Taubstummen Schwimm Verein’, so it’s a swimming club for the deaf-mute – don’t know what the English pc term now is (in Germany they’ve now changed it to the ‘Berliner Gehörlosen-Sport-Verein’).Which means these guys could never have heard Bo Diddley. Which is rather sad if you think about it.

Polio and typhoid were the big fears when I was growing up. I received the Salk vaccine in the first grade in North Carolina. I remember the sugar cubes, but cannot remember the circumstances in which we received them.

Of course, nowadays, with all the lawyers about, those vaccines would not have been allowed to be given as they were back then. So we would still have polio, etc., etc.

I see Sunday on FB (Lame Announcements & Updates), but not yet posted as a new FA (Normal+1:37 here). I’ll have to repost some time in the afternoon when I return to GoComics again. For now, just let me say that I love JuJuBes, though they’re harder to find these days than they used to be. Maybe it’s because they’re all hidden in prosthetics! —I never thought of that before.
