I always hated those Christmas cards with the kids’ pictures anyway. The whole idea is just as sacrilegious as any of the faces Calvin made. And annoying.

Yukoner: That’s what I’d do and say in the card something like, “Hope you enjoy the pictures of our little cut-up!”, “Happy Holidays!” How’s everyone fairing weather wise? It’s -3 degrees here at 7:00AM without the windchill. It hasn’t been out of the single digits during the day for two days with 40 to 50 mph winds.

67 here in Central Florida, Dino. 69 in the bedroom this morning (keeping the heat off). We’re about back to normal. Our mangoes survived the freeze, and we’re eating papayas from our tree that looks not too happy. Not sure about the tomatoes yet, but there’s time to plant more. Sounds like you’re livin’ in the plains. Hope it gets lots better.

I’ve always thought that pictures of the family for Christmas was not only tacky, but totally egotistical as well. We’re supposed to celebrating a different family at Christmas.

Hey, Dino-1. Wisconsin has been having it’s moments too. Up north they are competing with you from time to time. Down is SE we’ve spent a couple of days in positive single digits, but mostly in the positive teens. Just remember, Spring is only 40 days away!

I get it now! omg, I get it! I’ve read this comic so many times over the last 10-15 years and I finally get it! The second picture! He’s shaking his head and the camera caught the movement as a blur!! I never knew what the second picture was before. I feel both stupid and elated.

It’s a montage collage of the artist Calvin portraying his many alter egos and his fascination for self expression. Is he a product of his environment or predetermined DNA? Should we call Freud or Darwin?

Some have said… Calvin is a “Little Devil” and I have to say that fourth picture scares me! Is that his “Linda Blair” pose? If so then that would make them “Sacreligious”!

Misunderstood? More like, I just don’t get him when he acts this way for no apparent reason.

What’s the big deal about dressing up and having your picture taken, Calvin? I loved doing that when I was your age (I still do, in fact!), so I don’t see why it would have killed you to cooperate for once in your life.

I think those of you who hate Calvin should get yourselves organized and burn this 6 year old kid and his stuffed toy at the stake once and for all!—and you might as well publicy flog his cartoon parents while you’re at it.

This world could use less laughs.

    My god…you poor, poor people.

It’s a comic strip. Calvin isn’t a real boy. His parents aren’t real either. You’re getting outraged over something that ISN’T HAPPENING. You ever watch a movie? Guess what: that probably wasn’t real either. When did parents stop teaching their kids the difference between fantasy and reality?

I understand that humor is speculative, but even if they don’t find something funny, most intelligent people can at least RECOGNIZE it as an attempt at humor. Key word I guess is “intelligent.”

Dino-1 @ we are having one of the mildest winters in my 40 years in Yukon. Today is -4C (24F). Almost beach weather. And to make things better we are gaining sunlight at almost 5 minutes a day.

I like the last one. Draw 2 dots for eyes, and a smiley face mouth on the back of his head, and that’s a awesome card right there!

The school pictures where he Crisco’d his hair into crazy shapes were even funnier.

It’s too bad that so many people can’t even understand an award winning comic strip about a brilliant, introverted child and his 6 year old escapades, yet still feel the need to show their bland, imagination-less ignorance in comments. It seems some people were born as old farts and never had a childhood. There are other comics that warrant and practically beg for criticism of the characters. This isn’t one of them. How can anyone not find enjoyment in this delightful child?

And Sioux… Calvin is NOT the “nemesis” of Hobbes. Calvin is the hero. He’s the protagonist. So is Hobbes to a lesser degree, since Hobbes is the product of Calvin’s imagination. Everyone else are Calvin’s antagonists. Jeez!

@Aardvark359 Maybe intelligence is too much to ask, but a sense of humor would be probably be a reasonable expectation.

Some of you people just make my head hurt. Why on earth are you here reading this strip if all it makes you think of is beating the child? Go organize your socks or something.

Once again those of you who were deprived of your childhoods seem to be taking this too seriously. It is a comic strip folks. Calvin is a drawing. As far as Hobbes is concerned, he, I believe is Calvin’s Id, his voice of reason that Calvin never seems to want to listen to. The periodic attacks Calvin receives from Hobbes are the battle between what Calvin knows is right and what he really wants to do, whether it’s right or wrong.

Now, so much for the psychobabble, isn’t panel three HY-LARIOUS?

The day that C&H doesn’t make me at least smile is the day they’ve pronounced me dead. Apparently those of you who don’t get it don’t know enough 6-9 year old boys who do this kind of stuff ALL the time and you’ve murdered your inner child.

I’d rather people sent Christmas cards with pictures of their kids, because those of us who don’t get to see the loved kids in our families other than once a year or so really miss out on their childhoods. It’d be awesome if more parents sent pictures like these of Calvin, though, because these are what the kids are really like :D

Don’t like C&H? Don’t get it? Think everything can be solved with a whoopin’? Read another strip.

and mom.. you are the one to be blamed… Calvin never wanted it in the first place… the parents want kids to be what they like and making the kid loose his own identity… though T&C apply there.. hahaha…

    @miba: err… congrats.. I’m glad that you got it.. FINALLY… ;)

The number of comments has been huge here, and I’m not going to address all of them or even one of them directly. I’ll just “put in my spoke” and leave.

There’s no good reason at all for Calvin not to give his parents at least ONE good photograph. I don’t care about his age, personality type or anything else. ENFPs infamously don’t like to be told what to do, but they can also learn to negotiate better than just about anyone. One great picture in exchange for a bunch of delightfully silly ones seems to me a fair deal, and one that Calvin should’ve accepted.

Of course, the fact that Calvin DOESN’T do this is the basis of Bill W.’s humor. He’s almost certainly an ENFP himself and understands how such a person (whether child or adult) likes to Embrace His Inner Screwball.
