I think they’re considerably different. One of them works to steal the land, enslave the landholders and use military force against the dispossessed. The other one uses shock and horror to gain world-wide notoriety.
Several years ago I read the novel “Loyalties” by Yasmina Khadra about a successful Arab surgeon in Tel Aviv whose world falls apart amid the hatred and anger of Israeli Arabs towards the government. It was very disturbing and I made the mistake of mentioning it to a friend who had escaped from Iran when the Shah was toppled and then became a US and Israeli citizen. At the time she and her husband spent half the year in Jerusalem and they were both very observant Jews.
When I tried to discuss the Arabs’ situation she shut me down at once telling me what horrible people the Arabs were, they couldn’t be trusted, and on and on. Her reaction just made me feel worse about an already awful and depressing situation. I haven’t seen her since covid when the two of them went back there.
Please, tell me the antipated outcome when Hamas, with a stated goal of exterminating Israel, first takes the entire population of Gaza hostage before its actions of October 7. The world awaits a peaceful resolution of this situation that both sides honor.
Yes but, we know who started the bloodshed in such a terrifying way! The Palestinians who happen to be caught in the middle are victims as collateral damage. For as long as there is a Hamas, there will never be peace in the region; and if you think that if Hamas were to eliminate Israel as a State would be the end of it, think again, they would turn against the Palestinians who they use as a human shield, and they will go after us! These people don’t care for anybody. Among the victims killed and captured during the festival, there were Ukrainians, Russians, British, Irish, Germans, Americans, Canadians, French, Mexicans, Argentinians, Spaniards, Swedish, etc… people from 35 countries according to authorities! If we are NOT one of them, they want us out, period!!!
Sorry Clay, one his battling an enemy who does not want peace for their people, hide behind their people when they shoot off rockets, indiscriminately kills civilians, kills their own people to stay in power, and one is a Democracy that is surrounded by enemies.Sorry your Woke values do not work here
There’s bad people on both sides. There’s a lot of similarities to gang wars. I’m a fat, old, straight, white guy who was raised as a Reform Jew. I haven’t been in a synagogue in 60 years. I’m very proud of my Jewish heritage and learned a lot in my 10 years of religious school. Agnosticsm just made more sense to me. I started losing my admiration for Israel after the 1967 war. In the ‘50s Israel was a real morale booster for Jews after the Holocaust. It showed that Jews could kick fundament. You’re not antisemitic if you don’t agree with the policies of the present Israeli government. Many Israeli citizens don’t either.

… You like potato and I like potato
You like tomato and I like tomato
Potato, potahto, tomato, tomahto
Let’s call the whole thing off
Where is Pizza rat? He/She would end the war within 24 hours.

Good one, Clay. More balanced and thought provoking as empathy can be felt and sympathy given for the “collateral damage” on both sides.

It’s really childish — Semites attacking Semites, just like the Q/MAGA infighting. Are mature civil adults no longer allowed in leadership positions?

Hamas drew first blood. It included torturing and murdering children. They must be eliminated.

Sorry, Clay, no moral equivalence here. Israelis stand in front of their children; hamas (as distinct from the Palestinian people) hide behind them.

Hamas is not the nihilistic death cult that ISIS is (or was), but each and every member of it is evil.

The sad thing is that these people are the same. Religion is what is causing the problems. It makes me sad and angry at the same time.
