In the early 19th century when the Industrial Revolution picked up steam (get it?) America was a labor poor country, very happy to take advantage of Europe’s population explosion. The more things change…
Oh wait………………………..are we finally starting to discover this truth?…………..Here’s another question that I have for you, 74,223,975…………………………………who’s gonna buy your house?:
I grew up in Texas. Every summer, there would be truck loads of young men shipped across the border. ( Which for a teenage girl is already the definition of a good idea) They did all of the hard labor in the fields and were often working on construction projects. They lived in cheap motels, as many in a room as could find room on the floor and took the money they made back to their families in Mexico. Looking back, I suppose they were being exploited, but they didn’t seem unhappy about it. My memories of them were basically laughing, singing and joking as they worked.
If they could take their money back to their families and not have to pay for those families to live in the USA, I would imagine that a lot of those people wanting to come to the USA would rather stay home anyway. What happened to the program that allowed for this, and why can’t we reinstate it? Why can’t we expand it to include jobs that are not being filled- such as restaurant workers, landscaping, construction, or whatever? Why can’t we require that they be paid what the job is worth? This whole situation was handled much better 50 years ago than it is being now.
One thing about today’s immigrants is that they’ll come here and work for next to nothing because back where most of them come from, they KNOW what poor is. Here in America especially in NYC, you’ll see panhandlers wearing Air Jordans on the their feet! Go figure!
Lower your prices so that the average Joe can afford to eat there. And, vote republican so those silly rules about using illegal/undocumented labor can be ignored.
I read an article the other day about a program that supplements the wages of those who are full time workers but don’t make enough to support a decent style of living. That’s the wrong way of going about this. Instead, decide what is a living wage in the community and make it illegal to employ someone full time without paying them enough to live on. Sure, the employer may have to raise his prices, but supply and demand, as well as competition will keep that somewhat under control.
I hear employers are complaining about people not wanting to work. If they aren’t paid enough to live on, what’s the point?
Nobody travels that far through dangerous areas, risking the lives of themselves and their children to get a free meal or free blanket. They come here to work.
To be more accurate, the owners of the diner need to be asking, “Where are we going to get more workers willing to work for $7.50 per hour with no benefits.” However, this cartoon is correct. Texas alone has 300,000 more job openings than it has people to fill them.

Introduce a guestworker program.
They work so well in progressive nations.
Of course, they don’t have an impacted bowel we call: Congress.

Bigger question is does us have space to accommodate that many refugees?

None of these criminal illegal alien migrants are able to work here legally. So they work illegally for a lot less than minimum.

This could be solved easily, like other advanced countries have done.

Republicans are slowly learning there is a downside to their racism and bigotry.

It’s not a labour shortage, it’s a wage shortage.

Vet them and let in those who want to work. We already have enough native born sitting on their hands and demanding a government check.

I guess republicans will do it since they don’t want any new people to come into America. That only seems fair.
