It really happened. The following is a quote from the Wikipedia page about an Italian painter named Daniele Da Volterra:
__"Daniele is infamous for having covered over, with vestments and fig-leaves, many of the genitals and backsides in Michelangelo’s The Last Judgment fresco in the Sistine Chapel. This work was begun in 1565, shortly after the Council of Trent had condemned nudity in religious art. It earned Daniele the nickname “Il Braghettone” (“the breeches-maker”).
He also chiseled away a part of the fresco and repainted the larger part of Saint Catherine and the entire figure of Saint Blaise behind her. This was done because in the original version Blaise had appeared to look at Catherine’s naked behind, and because to some observers the position of their bodies suggested sexual intercourse.
The loincloths and draperies in the lower half of the fresco, however, were not painted by Daniele. His work on the Last Judgment was interrupted at the end of 1565 by the death of Pope Pius IV, after which the scaffolding he used had to be removed quickly because the chapel was needed for the election of a new pope."__
Luckovich is right on point as usual but wish he would have used Michelangelo’s masterpiece “David” in today’s strip since that is what has happened recently in Florida which resulted in the firing of a school’s principal.
Are those “button-front”? I accidentally bought a pair of “button-front” jeans once at Goodwill, almost brand new. Have you any idea how long it takes to “use” those things?
That image has been up there for centuries. NOW they freak out about it? Prudes should not be allowed in there or at the very least distracted from looking up. Or around them. Maybe they should just stay home.
I’m impressed that Michelangelo chiseled that gorgeous statue out of solid stone. That is art. It is nothing to be ashamed of and hidden. The shame is in the eyes of the narrow minded.
When I first heard about the Florida parents objecting to the statue of David, I thought, “People, it’s a bleedin’ ROCK!” You have to wonder if maybe those parents had been hit on their heads by rocks…might account for their lunacy.
Reminds me of the Vatican Museum where they actually attached plaster fig leafs to cover up the private parts of classical Greek and Roman nude statues. Seriously? Who are they trying to fool? We all are nudes after all.

More proof that there isn’t a god or any gods, it’s all man’s doing.

Another symptom of an educational system which has been politicized to the point of actually not educating any more.

This exact same cartoon (except that it was tighty-whities instead of jeans) was run in an Italian newspaper; I think I ran across that one yesterday.

The original complainer about David was a mother; I bet her children were conceived through a hole in a sheet.
