Ouch! Luann just got burned by Mrs. Horner! lol

Luann should know better than to talk in class, if her teacher is that close to her. Either that, or she needs to develop some ASMR style whispering skills. lol

I’m still thinking she won’t be able to control her curiosity and will steam open the envelope.

Reminds me of the time my 3rd grade teacher proved to us how reverse psychology works: he got so fed up with us talking and not paying attention during class that one day, he just threw his hands up and told us all to just go ahead and keep talking all we wanted, he didn’t care. He went back to his desk, but we all clammed up like we were afraid to utter another word, despite his insistence that we could go ahead and talk all we wanted. That got the message across.

So Bernice is over Piro!? That certainly would lead to conflict. Especially with a “damaged” requited lover! Will Piro change from loner to stalker!?

I remember getting caught talking in class by my nearly 80 year old 7th grade typing teacher, Mrs. Scott. As I went to leave the class, she motioned for me to come to her desk. She said I should come back to class after school to sit at my typewriter and type 100 times, without error or strikeover, that I would not talk in class. Since I was a fairly fast and accurate typist, I figured it would be a piece of cake and I would be out of there in relatively short order.

Well, after school, I get to class and she points to the blackboard up front. There was the sentence I had to type perfectly 100 times:

“Unless, henceforth, specifically called upon by the teacher, I will refrain from elucidating upon the copiousness of my vocabulary within the confines of this classroom.”

    .

I still remember it after 53 years. It was pretty late when I got the hell out of there that night.

Here’s where the note becomes Pandora’s Box, the center of conflict, the betrayal of Piro’s trust.

    Okay, Luann.

FIRST – Don’t EVER confide your innermost thoughts to this “Tara person.” This arc has proven that she is definitely NOT on your “team.”

SECOND – Give that letter to Bernice (Another person who’s NOT on your “team”) and let HER “agonize” over its contents, days, weeks, or months, before she actually has the guts to open it. It should prove highly entertaining and might be worth a couple of chapters in a future short story.

THIRD – And I cannot stress this enough, Find a better class of friends. Or better yet, reconnect with trusted old ones like Gunther.

Because if you want CONFLICT just want until you say “hello” to your old pal Gunny with Bets standing a mere two feet away from him. ;-)

Several commenters here don’t seem to think that Luann has yet “gotten the memo” or the message indicated by Piro handing her a sealed envelope containing his message to Bernice. P/W has been focused on Luann only as a means to contact Bernice, but only to deliver a message and not to begin a face-to-face encounter. Luann could easily and quickly have told him that Bernice is living at her house, and even have invited him to visit. If any of these students had even half of Bets’ enthusiasm about smartphone usage, they would have exchanged contact info within seconds and Walt would soon be able to interact directly with Bernice. But his interest seems limited to merely remote contact via a written message. That might include an apology for trouble that he caused previously, but it is not likely to be an invitation to get together. If the latter were what he wants, he could be much more proactive and direct about arranging it. But no, he is maintaining his distance, perhaps fearing that even a minimal contact would be received as an unwelcome intrusion. Presumably, the letter must include contact information that would enable Bernice to respond, even if only in the coldest, most formal manner. Piro/Walt can’t be expecting Luann to serve any ongoing role as a messenger between them. However Bernice may wish to respond, the ball will be in her court. Meanwhile, his character remains a cypher, since he hasn’t been shown speaking at length to anyone even when they try to engage him in conversation. Certainly he has not initiated any interaction except this tentative remote contact with a written message to Bernice. It is not clear even whether he hopes for Bernice to respond, or what he might do if she does.

Focus Luann! Mrs Horner is so courteous in the way she’s pointing out to Luann that she’s disturbing her class, she really is a sweet elderly lady, as well as being her friend/mentor. I’ve always loved situations where someone is explaining things and the protagonist is doing exactly that without realizing it. Kinda sweet Luann thinks Bernice is over Piro, because it’s almost certain that she will be interested again at the first opportunity.

Luann simply does not have the concentration, determination or the inspiration to be a writer. Or a student for that matter. She would better off doing gig jobs that don’t require intense, long-term learning. So many other commentors have suggested theatre. Too bad she can’t go back to working with the children.

Kind of like when Larry Crowne got busted by Ed Matsutani for using his cell phone in his class. “They call them smartphones but only dummies use them in my class.”

Luann has no off switch, no filters and no regard for other’s privacy or authority. She has had a horrible upbringing by Frank and Nancy if she hasn’t been taught these very simple rules of politeness. It’s like she was raised by wolves, but at least she’s winning the local Drama Queen contest! Next, Mrs. Horner will hold her after class, hear the story, and suggest Luann write something based on these events….problem is, Luann will use real names and descriptions because she’s not really very bright. (She will give Bernice the letter though, unopened).

I’m still wondering how I would feel about getting a written message instead of a personal visit or call from an old “friend”. Guess it depends on what it says, but then, is Bernice going to write a reply and send it back with Luann?? GADS.

Sometimes despite your best intentions, your mind wanders. I remember one time back in 1972 when I couldn’t pay attention to my geometry teacher, Mary Jo Milligan Smith. Other matters had distracted me.it may have even happened other times.

I used to get called out for talking during 7th grade English to a girl that I liked and she liked me. The teacher would yell ‘Robbie and Becky’ stop talking yet when the teacher gave out new seating assignments, she always sat the two of us together.
