I live 3-4 miles from an active volcano. Sometimes the wind shifts. You know it’s not snow because: 1) It’s still July. 2) Ash doesn’t melt on your tongue.
Garfield once mistook ash from Jon’s (unnoticed) burn pile for snow when about to catch a bit on his tongue. (Also, know of any winter volcanic eruptions?)
Has Spud been watching too many disaster documentaries about Yellowstone? That’s the only volcano that could throw ash as far as Rhode Island, unless one went off in Iceland and the winds for some reason went west, not east nor south or north.
With everything going on in the world, I was wondering if he was referring to fallout at first. Linus had the same reaction the first time he saw snow – thought it was fallout from WW3.

Sounds like this is a yearly occurrence for Spud. Or does it happen with any fresh snowfall?

One big difference. Snow, OK to use windshield wipers. Volcanic ash, do not use windshield wipers.

We had ash fall in Portland when Mt. St. Helens erupted in 1980 but it was only flurries.
