Yeah. My grandma once told me to go out and get a switch (a stick) to hit me with. I don’t rem what I did. I was gone for hours and came back empty handed of course. 50+ years later I really don’t think she would have hit me. She was a good and smart grandma.
I think my grandma had really good ears. She could be anywhere else in the house, but if we tried sneaking into the candy jar or cookie tin, we would hear, “What are you do~ing?” Not that she would deny us a treat.
We try to keep the cookie jar full and the grandkids can get cookies anytime they want. I always have a can of ginger snaps on my desk. They always ask for those and they never take more than one.
There is a small, black cat who persists in coming in the house to eat my cats’ “cookies”, i.e. snacks on top of kibble in their food bowl. I give her a handful outside on a table and she pretends to be satisfied. However, hours later I find she has reverted to her understanding of The Rule: she is not allowed in the house while I am looking .
I’m am not looking to adopt this cat and would be horrified if someone took one my cats via “alienation of affection”. :)

That sounds exactly like what my oldest grandson would have said when he was Nelson’s age!
He just turned 28, yesterday. Now he has a 5-year-old daughter whose middle name is mischief.

Sometimes it’s better to ask for forgiveness rather than asking for permission first.
