I’ve always wondered about that too. First in relation to what? That goes for “first national banks” as well. Why does every one of them claim to be the first?

Not to mention a bank calling itself “First Third Bank”

Back when “America was Great” (according to Republicans). I was in South Carolina. There was a small back road with two churches right next to each other: one whites only the other colored.

There is a “Who’s on First?” parody hidden in this comic, just fighting to get out.

Since they are Baptist churches, good bet both are lying.

I once saw a church called “Third Assembly of God.” But the cartoon is right – you rarely see a “Second or Third!”

Given all the various denominations.. “all” claiming the same God, one would think they all might be lying

Not necessarily. They could have been from different communities that grew until they merged. They were each still First in their specific community

My grandmother used to drag me to her church which was named “the Free-will Southern Baptist Church” but, as I recall, there was very little, if any “freedom” involved in the belief system preached about inside – but that was alright, because the same conditions applied to my mother’s church – the Catholic church.

Incidentally, my mother never went with us to church, while we visited Grandmother, and I never thought to ask why she never ment to mass in the small southern community where Grandmother lived – I guess I just assumed the small communities in the South couldn’t afford the edifices “required” by “Catholicism” – strange how childish minds work isn’t it?

Of course, I discovered there were no Catholic churches where Grandmother lived because the congregations in the South where she lived were not erudite enough to be able to speak a second language – or so I figured out on my own, eventually. I was taught from infancy to NEVER ask about religion, so my suppositions remained “private” until I became a teen-ager and then, of course, I questioned EVERYTHING!
