If you can’t fix a problem 100%, why bother doing anything at all?
If you can’t fix the climate crisis completely, why try to reduce carbon footprint by using less petroleum at all?
If you can’t fix everyone’s mental health problems all the time, why try to prevent people who can’t prove that they can use guns responsibly from having access to guns?
One of the standard techniques that the right whingers use is to argue that <whatever you suggest> isn’t a perfect answer and so it isn’t the right thing to do. Like saying you shouldn’t eat oatmeal because if you eat ONLY oatmeal, you’ll die because you need other nutrients.
This ’toon is a nice instance of that exact falsehood.
Gun violence advocates like Goodwyn have NO interest in providing mental health care for anyone who cannot afford it.
Just like ALL health care.
.
They also want to “harden” schools and everything else. Without any taxpayer dollars, of course. Those are reserved for the defense budget and investigating widespread undetectable voter fraud.
Mass shootings by the mentally ill seems to be a mostly US problem. Can it be the rest of the developed world has no insanity. Or could it be some other commonality?
An expert in mass shootings has said, for years, to reduce mass shootings do the following: Never give the shooters name or body count on anything but strictly local news. Many want the publicity, and want to hear the record. Also, the worst school death count was due to a bomb set off. Could have been worse. A second bomb didn’t go off. The only gun involved was the one the bomber used to shoot himself. Harden the schools will help. Gun free zones in affect say to shooters: “Helpless victims here. High body count likely”. The vast majority of mass shootings occur in “gun free” zones.
Why does America have more mental health problems than any other advanced nation? With Republican leadership, Congress and states can study this issue ad infinitum while we let the invisible hand of the market take care of the problem like it always does.
It’s so easy to come up with a convenient solution……and it makes it A-OK to take NRA bribe money…after all, that’s more important than lives…right? Am I right? ?
As a cartoonist with obvious Repub leanings, I’d be interested in how you think we can handle this mental health and shootings issue. Will there be increased funding for mental health assistance? Having done that, will there be laws that will limit gun ownership to those who have proven mental balance? I don’t see increased funding for mental health. I don’t see laws to prevent any gun ownership. So, what will you do? Limit purchasers to those with NRA membership?
There’s no money/profit in healthcare. It’s the easiest budget to cut for politicians trying to look “fiscally conservative”. People suffering from mental illness are less likely to vote and pay taxes. Easy target.
Problems can have more than one source… crazy I know. I might blow your mind even more, but you can address each one of them individually, and don’t have to take an “all or nothing” approach.
Making it harder to access guns AND improving mental health supports is the solution. Not just one, not just the other.
“Young adults with anger management and impulse control issues are a parent’s challenge. Young adults with anger management and impulse control issues and a Glock 19 pistol with an extended magazine are a nation’s shame.” —-Patrick Skinner, Police officer, Savannah GA; former CIA officer, served in Coast Guard and on US Capitol Police
I don’t imagine he’s some lefty-commie-pinko-antifa-America-hater.
The problem isn’t solved, but at least now he isn’t taking anyone else with him. I’m glad Goodwyn recognizes that something needs to be done before these mass shooters become mass shooters; perhaps he realizes that maybe easy access to high powered guns without any waiting period isn’t the best thing for a nation with abysmal mental health access.
My friend tells me that metal illness, gun violence, are problems that will be fixed when we bring his god back into our lives. I thought about the millions of thoughts and prayers that are invoked every time one of these events happened. Probably many gods are asked to intervene. And I think we have to do this one on our own and not wait for divine intervention.

Yes, in that he won’t have a gun to shoot up a school. Taking care of mental health is a different issue.

Part of it, at least. But in the Alternate Universe, guns are not a problem. They are a deity you parade around and show off.

And yet it doesn’t address the problem of white supremacist groups radicalizing men of all ages into becoming terrorists.

The problem of mass murder of children is solved. Now you move on to addressing mental health . . . Which the GOP won’t do either.

Mental health issues. Hmmm. Maybe we should work to undo the damage Raygun did to state mental hospitals during his administration.
