I been a life long opponent of capital punishment. My only regret is that I would not have been able to save her without lying to get on her jury. God bless you Melissa.
Juries are supposed to convict only if they are persuaded of guilt “beyond a reasonable doubt.” I wonder just how much actual juries take this to heart. I suggest that it could be made more real to them if there were some provision that, should evidence emerge to cast doubt on a murder conviction where an execution is carried out, the jury members be charged with murder themselves. (Maybe second-degree, or manslaughter.) Maybe plus the prosecutor and police as well, depending on circumstances.
Why do we kill people who kill people to prove killing people is wrong? And, if this person set to die is innocent (I admit I don’t really know about Melissa’s story), that’s even worse.
Bex’s citations to The Innocence Project and NPR are excellent sources of information. According to NPR, there was a technical conflict between state and federal courts.
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals on Monday granted a stay of execution for Melissa Lucio, halting her execution scheduled for Wednesday and sending her case back to the trial court to review new evidence.

Getting a conviction seems often more important than serving justice.

We are not asking for mercy. What we need is justice.

I’m not familiar with this story, but I’m fully opposed to the death penalty so I hope she won’t be executed whether she’s guilty or not.

I’m sorry, Lalo, you know better than I that Texas is the last place to expect mercy.
The blood lust is too deep into their psyches.

Thanks those those who posted links. Praying for Melissa to be spared.

There is so much doubt about the circumstances around the case—much of which has arisen since her trial.
The death penalty is irreversible.
