    Some German settlers in Central Texas, near Fredericksburg and Comfort, tried to flee south to Mexico to escape Confederate rule. Confederate soldiers tracked many of them down and murdered them. To this day, there’s a monument in Comfort with the dead men’s names, known as “True to the Union.”

    In the original novel of GWTW, Rhett serves modestly in the Confederate Army late in the war, so that Bonnie won’t be ostracized. The GWTW film is fascinating, but not a documentary.
