Schoolboards saying that you can’t teach about the Holocaust without teaching alternate viewpoints or saying that you can’t teach about slavery or other bigotry don’t help either.
Unions and right wingers have never been tolerant of each other. Because Unions give power to workers, which the right wing thinks is wrong and stupid. And Right wingers oppose that power distribution, which the folks who make up the unions find their opinion annoying at the absolute best.
I’m happy to see that some places are starting to be unionized. Including $tarbucks!
Having spent more than a decade working on public education issues, I’m convinced that the entrenched leadership of both boards of education and teacher unions are generally obstacles to improving education. That said, having dealt with such folks behind closed doors, at least in the states where I worked, union locals affiliated with the AFT were far more likely to promote student interests in ways that had aspects adverse to teachers, such as effective assessment and accountability programs.
Come on republigoon slave gorrell! If it weren’t for teacher unions, education would be back in the stone age. Teachers are vastly overworked and underpaid! The majority of their supplies are not provided to them! They have to use their own money to get supplies for each student,if they teach grade school and for multiple classes if they teach Junior high. That’s not counting the lesson plans for the entire school year that they have to make, plan for field trips ( once again, if they teach grade school ) and staying up late grading papers so they can be turned back to the student the next day! That doesn’t even take in to account the time the teacher has to take to make sure the classroom is set up before the first day of school or the problem students that the teachers have to deal with! The simple fact is that you and your ilk (chickens&$ts like guttersnipe) gorrell have no idea what a teacher has to do in their job!!! Teachers are vastly overworked and underpaid!!! Goodnight and good luck.
Sorry, you’re wrong. This country has treated teachers like glorified baby sitters rather than educators for far too long. Having to deal with helicopter parents who raised their children poorly is beyond the call. Heap on that the reporting paperwork and the endless testing leaves very little time for actual teaching. Every teacher deserves combat pay even before the pandemic.
I don’t blame unions one but for standing up and protecting teachers financially.
Parents are the worm in the apple. They’re the weakest link in the education system.
Conservatives hate unions. They tell people to put their trust in Republicans. They say that the arrogant, self-aggrandizing billionaires who fund and run the party truly have the interests of everyday people in their hearts. Just look at how wealth in America continues to migrate to the wealthy! Doesn’t that make you feel good?
We are not politicians or public thinkers; we are the rich; we own America; we got it, God knows how, but we intend to keep it if we can by throwing all the tremendous weight of our support, our influence, our money, our political connections, our purchased Senators, our hungry Congressmen, our public-speaking demagogues into the scale against any legislature, any political platform, any presidential campaign that threatens the integrity of our estate —Frederick Townsend Martin
My experience, as a teacher, with critics of teachers and unions tends to boil down to 1) you don’t work a full year and 2) you have benefits that others do not. My follow up questions: 1) why didn’t you become a teacher? and 2) why don’t you work to get those benefits in your job? were usually ignored.
Gorrell who is safely copy/pasting his cartoons from the comfort of his home, is criticizing teachers who want a safe workplace for themselves and their students.
or maybe this cartoon is supposed to be about ‘critical race theory’ it’s so vague it’s impossible to tell. Gorrell and the GOP only wants to teach the history that makes them feel good.
Imagine how we’d feel if Germany announced that their schools were banned from teaching about World War II and the Holocaust.
Let me get this straight. There are simple measures to mitigate the spread of Covid (masking and social distancing) and 3 effective vaccines, readily available. However, a large segment of Americans refuse to do either for political reasons. Some of our political leaders are going out of their way to prevent employers from demanding that their employees follow these rather simple measures. Now we have a raging pandemic with these very people clogging up the hospitals, closing down businesses and sending their sick kids to school.
But by all means blame the teacher’s unions.
Half my 8th grade class is out due to Covid and I’ve had to cover other classes because my colleagues are sick or their kids are sick. Around the country principals are warning that they may have to shut down because of staffing shortages. Here in California the governor mandates that schools that offer distance learning will not get school funds. So, what are we supposed to do?
It’s time to point the finger at the real culprit here, politicians who have decided that sabotaging the covid recovery is their best path to power.
Of course the right is going after school content. Teachers come from colleges/universities. “Everyone” knows all higher education is full of liberals and their damned liberal beliefs. Therefore, everything they teach is liberal “crap” even tho’ it’s true. Gotta keep everything taught go thru the white supremacy filter.
Over the past 2 years, no one has done more damage to public education in this country than public school teachers. They have managed to ensure and promote the future of private schools and home schooling. Good luck at getting any public education levies passed for the next several years.
Wrong comparison, Bob. If we continue with the teacher unions as worms, then they would be earth worms whose excrement fertilizes the whole apple tree.
Hey Bob, how about another cartoon using the same apple, same worm. Only in this version, the worm would be labeled“police unions”, and the apple would be “ police reform.”
Goofy Gorrell advocates education for profit systems. Only the rich can afford education, and the rest can just be the uneducated serfs they’re meant to be.
All teacher unions are for is to funnel the money they steal from teachers in the form of dues directly to the democrat party I return the teacher unions teach all of the commie bullshit that democrats support teachers deserve better

Yes, the problem with education is the people trying to get teachers a decent salary for an incredibly difficult job that requires a Master’s Degree.
