Most public toilets don’t have lids! Suddenly the portable toilets are more sanitary by comparison. Would help if people would not pee outside of the hole.
We agreed to lower the lid before flushing years ago — not because of the germs but in order to resolve the toilet seat up or down issue. If we both have to close the lid, we’re both equally responsible.
Mythbusters did an episode on the aerosol effect of flushing. Toothbrush, walls etc. since then I have always put the lid down, even though there was some small effect then.
Easy obvious solution – Pre flush prep with laboratory quality PPE. Post flush recovery with hazmat gear and toxic chemicals. Dispose in clearly labeled sealed container.
There are a lot of other disease exposures (than Covid) from toilet plumes. Depending on who has been using the toilet, C-Difficile, norovirus or salmonella could come out. Though the risk is low, it’s best to avoid the plume when possible.

Always close the lid. In all of history, nothing ever was dropped accidentally into a closed toilet.

Probably flushing with one’s mouth wide open, as illustrated, also increases one’s exposure to hazardous particles.

Of course, the CoVID19 part only happens if you are already infected.
