The middle ground, circa 1970, was about 10 paces behind where the donkey is now. The GQP won’t step even a silly millimeter toward anything the Dems offer, and every time they DO offer something, the GQP backs up.
From the point of view of your northern neighbour, the US has got the right, and the far right. Democrats aren’t left of anything, other than the Trumplicans.

If republicans can’t agree to help end the pandemic by urging their supporters to get vaccinated, there’s no middle ground.
If republicans can’t agree to investigate 1/6 because they’re trying to gaslight everyone in the thinking the insurrectionists were just tourists, there’s no middle ground.
if republicans can’t agree that Americans have a right to vote, and instead keep passing laws to make it harder to vote, there’s no middle ground.
as long as republicans pledge their loyalties to Trump, there’s no middle ground.
The republicans have always believed no Democrat can be a legal president… I would opine that same attitude includes any government official. When Obama was elected, their heads nearly exploded. A second term blew them away. Their watchword was obstruct, obstruct, obstruct. Their goal was to make Obama a lame duck the first day of his presidency. Didn’t work. Trump gave them permission to shed any ethics, morals, or patriotism for the country. Most have have shown themselves to be as narcissistic and malignant as their cult leader.
Since Nixon , to conservatives/republicans, I have gone from being moderate right to being a far left socialist lib-tard communist without changing one position.
I’m beginning to believe that a middle ground is not even possible any more. I continue to be disgusted with both parties for not even trying to get there any more. Their petty little egos are hurting all of us.

Interesting that a cartoonist who is usually pandering to right-wing mouth foamers is suddenly bemoaning the perceived lack of moderation.

the republicans have built their “representation” on mis-information, gerrymandered districts, and a malformed senate
the real middle ground is what the media calls the left
what the washington middle ground want to build is more pork, infrastructure built on sand

Bob, you needed to draw the phant actively digging and shoveling his ground into the pit. But that would have taken effort.

Gorrell hates democracy, like all Trump Disciples and wants to destroy it in America.
This cartoon is at least not a LIE in the sense that Gorrell does not pretend there is any middle ground to be had.
The LIE is, of course, the implication of both sides do it — equally.

Republicans have been undercutting American democracy since Reagan.
Republicans want to end 240 years of American democracy so they can have a lying racist thieving cult dictator.

Where’s the middle ground? In the middle of the Democratic Party. Republicans are far and away from mainstream America.
