Given that a sizeable number of Americans at the time were Tories, it’s doubtful the revolutionaries had any such illusions, They saw the authoritarians coming.
Yeah, we wouldn’t want anyone trying to re-write history, like declaring that someone who clearly lost an election actually won, even thought there are zero shreds of evidence to support that re-write.
Discount and badmouth those taken prisoner of war in Viet Nam. Have your supporters carry the flags of fascist Germany and the secessionist Confederate states while rioting against legitmate election results through the nation’s capitol on January 6. That’s the way to honor freedom…/s
Can’t forget what you don’t learn.. and given the sad state of education in some of those red states.. it’s little wonder American values are going the wrong way.
“. . . in the name of . . .” Aye, there’s the rub. Put a warm fuzzy word across your real motives and purposes for killing people and breaking things, and fools will be fooled every time.
…never forget, discount, or revise the sacrifices made in the name of liberty.
Indeed. To do so properly, we need to know all that we can about those sacrifices. Dr. Joseph Warren – Boston patriot leader #1 – healer – Maj. General. Killed in action against the British on Breed’s Hill outside of Boston.
How could we ever forget the handsome young Dr. Warren??? [because most people never heard of him in the first place]
Sacrifice discounting is in the eye of the beholder. Some Continentals were righteous, and some were scallywags. Mr. Jefferson & Mr. Washington were slave owners. No one should be able to tell anyone else how much or how little ‘discount’ such variables present. It’s the stuff of opinions. If facts change some opinions, so be it.
One supposes that teaching students more facts can be called revising. In the course of human events, and certainly in the course of American events, great things happened and terrible things happened. The truth of the great things we can remember and celebrate. The truth of the terrible things we can remember and mourn. Facts are facts. Take them as you will.
Past sacrifices made in the name of liberty cannot be changed. They happened. How you ‘feel’ about it all is your business. Suppressing or denying negative [or positive] factual information about the American experience is surely the opposite of the liberty that so much sacrifice has gone into.
We should never discount the sacrifices made to preserve our liberty. However, we should stop holding up the military as the people who are fighting for our liberty. Worshipping the military is what fascist countries do.
Since the War of 1812, the only war you could argue that was fought for our liberty was WW2. The rest were fought for other reasons. The military protects our borders and our geopolitical interests. The ones who protect our liberty are the people who vote, the ones who refuse to sit at the back of the bus. The ones who take a knee or turn their back. Protesters are protecting our liberty, whether it’s for gun rights or abortion rights.
And nobody is doing that now. They have been revising, white washing, and distorting history for a long time. Now it is time to teach what really happened, not what the reich-wingers want to have happened.
I have read an essay which includes the observation that there are many words to characterize one of our two major political parties, but the word “patriotic” is not among them.

Yes, — “liberty” for some of the people and not for “others!!”

Does that statement include the Loyalists who fled to Canada? Once again, an inane cartoon means nothing.
