Teach children to call you by your name when lost because a) there are a lot of “mommies” out there and b) a lot of mothers learn to turn off their response to that call after the four thousandth time. :)
When I was 4, I got momentarily lost in a field (I believe a pipeline right-of-way) beside our house in the city. We moved away later that year, but when I went back as a teenager, the field was only 12 feet wide and maybe 30 feet long. Perspective to a 4 year old.
I have a VIVID memory of being VERY young, riding my tricycle up the street, getting totally lost (a few doors from my own house) and sitting in the middle of the street on my trike wailing like a banshee. My mother heard me and sent my older brother out to rescue me.
