I bet the S on the compass stood for “somewhere.” What would the W and E thereon stand for?

Compasses are no good unless you know what direction where you want to go lies from where you are.

Having said that, I remember visiting a friend in a small Oklahoma town. Their phonebook was just a few pages, and adresses were things like “east of town.”

That only works up to a certain point. Here in Reykjavík, Iceland, it’s off by about 12 degrees, so the compass actually points a bit west of north. If you were directly east of the magnetic north pole, the “N” would be west, and if you were between the magnetic and geographic north poles, “N” would be south.

One of the tricks they taught us in survival school is that since all trees look the same, if you want to travel in a specific compass direction, send a member of your party as far out into the woods as you can see him and then direct him where to stand and then walk up to him and repeat the process.

The trick is, don’t pick someone who looks like a tree.

The question I have is, if orient means east, why is it when you orient a map, you put north on the top?
