While I’d love for my grandkids to be in school, there are still small COVID outbreaks at the schools they’d attend among kids going fulltime. Maybe, Mr. Goodwyn, if you had loved ones at risk, you’d draw something not marching in lockstep with the alt-right. P.S.: I concur with DST not being needed.
I believe that the problem they were trying to fix with daylight/standard time was that the hours of daylight and sunrise/sunset vary greatly during the year. They were trying to make more daylight “available” to people while not having children walking to the bus stop in the dark (especially in rural areas with no sidewalks) while sleepy drivers are on the roads.
I guess Al’s universe is like this one: America has yet to discover electricity and lighting. LED lights have gotten very cheap and efficient. Perhaps it’s time to retire DST for good. Most Asia countries never had it since it’s much like cutting off the bottom of a blanking and adding it to the top to try and make it longer.
Schools have been opening already. Our district is using a hybrid model, which I find less than useful but fully in line with keeping the kids and the teachers as safe as possible. Teachers have not had their vaccinations yet for the most part. As for the other complaint, I fully agree. I don’t see the point behind DST. I complain about it every year. This is all on Congress as they haven’t permitted our region to abolish it yet. They can’t even get a non-political bipartisan thing right.
If republicans had not given the USA the biggest case of covid in the world, schools would be open. Anti Public Health Right wingers are apparently brainless idiots.
Oh, pulease. Kids in sports or other extracurricular programs have been catching the bus or walking home in the dark in the afternoon. Sheesh. I’d much rather stay on Day Light Savings Time than have daylight at 4 in the morning.
Of course, that is some of the dilemma with DST, is where you fall in the time zones and when the sun rises and sets where you are. After all, few of us live in true time.
We continue to do it because businesses benefit when there is more daylight in the evening for people to do stuff (the golf industry, for example, gain greatly from people having an extra hour after work to play a quick nine holes).
It was originally done to (supposedly) give farmers an extra hour of daylight at the end of the day to work, but I’ve read that it’s generally unpopular because it means that farmers who have to deliver their goods to market in the morning have to rise and prepare an hour earlier to make it to market on time.
Of course, the cartoon demonstrates that Goodwyn is either too lazy to do the work to understand why Daylight Savings exists, or too stupid to understand it.
It’s worse than just “magical thinking”. It’s actively harmful to the economy (not much) and to people. Not VERY harmful, but statistically worse than any given Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. We don’t reduce electricity consumption, we don’t save gasoline, we don’t get anything at all of value.

What’s the big deal about busing in the dark?

On the count of schedules, I agree with the negativity. On the count of the school reopening conundrum – good lord, man, have you lost your senses?

The school year is almost over, so no use opening them now… same logic as not impeaching Trump the second time, since his term would be over soon…

The Republican Crime Family has promised their base affordable daycare so in come the teachers. They are cheaply paid by the state governments.
