I have to assume Varvel has not so much as glanced at HR 1. But if something makes voting more available to people who don’t look like him, he and all his GQP buddies are against it. I like what I see in HR 1, though I have not read it through. It shocks me that voting in this country is seen as a threat to that increasingly minority voice of the radical right. The segment on voter caging is telling — the radical right loves voter caging and has for years. Back in 1986 a leaked memo between Republican operatives notes: “I would guess that this program will eliminate at least 60-80,000 folks from the rolls. . . . If it’s a close race, which I’m assuming it is, this could keep the black vote down considerably.” (Thomas B. Edsall, Ballot Security Effects Calculated, WASH. POST, Oct. 24, 1986, at A1; Martin Tolchin, G.O.P. Memo Tells of Black Vote Cut, N.Y. TIMES, Oct. 25, 1986, at 17.)

But sure, lie all you want, Varvel — America is going to move on without you.

Hopefully HR1 will force candidates to take their message to EVERY registered voter in a manner that better compels more eligible voters to vote. The % of eligible voters who voted in 2020 was pathetically low. Whatever will get more people to vote in honestly run elections the better for all of us.

as I understand it, the bill raises what needs to be raised in order to get matching funds, this will be restricting of third party access. . .. a bad provision

it also lets politicians who probably dont need it to get more matching funds

My Grandmother was proud when women were allowed to vote. It took a Constitutional amendment. She voted in every election from then on. She and my Grandad would save to be able to pay the “Poll Tax” every election year. This was in Texas, but it was scattered in states all over.At around $1,50 it was expensive to all poor people. So many people didn’t vote.

Now do the one with the Klansman turning away a long line of brown people from the polls.

The desiderata is a voting process that’s both secure and convenient. It’s the bedrock of democracy, and it’s not that difficult from a technical standpoint.

Opponents of a voting rights bill would have you believe that the legislation will allow murderers, teenagers, welfare recipients and immigrants in the country illegally to vote en masse — and that every American will now only cast ballots by mail. These attacks on the legislation are rife with misinformation.

Known as the For the People Act, the 791-page H.R. 1 combines proposals for voter registration, absentee voting, in-person voting, campaign finance and ethics related to federal elections. The House passed the bill March 3 largely along party lines, with Democrats in favor Republicans opposed. It now goes to the Senate.

The future impact of some provisions of the bill, such as whether campaign finance provisions would limit free speech of certain donors, are a subject of debate. But attacks on some of the sections about voting are false or omit important context.

Several states currently conduct elections almost entirely by mail, sending ballots automatically to every registered voter. But H.R. 1 would not force every state to conduct elections this way.

Rather, the bill would ease the process of voting by mail for those who want to use it, by lifting rules that require an excuse to vote absentee. It would not require anyone to stop using either early in-person voting or in-person voting on Election Day.

The bill does not permit voting by noncitizens in U.S. elections, whether they’re in the country legally or not. Pence was referring to a provision that would require automatic voter registration for people using services at government agencies.

Varvel is trying to see how many false narratives he can pack into one “cartoon”. Anything to distract from republican led legislatures trying to disallow as many valid registrations in minority communities as they can. “Oh look. There is someone in another state with a similar name, so this one must be false.”

Hey Varvel – now do one where a non-white person of appropriate age and valid ID is being turned away from the polls by Mitch McConnell (or any Republican Congressperson you can name for that matter). Republicans would bring back poll taxes, government quizzes and jellybean jar counts in a heartbeat if they could get away with it and YOU would be ok with it.

There is a bill pending here locally in the Portland area that would ban the sell of diesel to large trucks over 25 years old in the 3 county area. A local right wing radio host falsely claimed on Facebook that it would ban all diesel completely for all vehicles. Local right wingers on FB bought it lock, stock and barrel, and have been going nuts over this. I have answered with corrections multiple times, but you might as well be trying to move Mt Everest a scoop at a time with a garden spade. These people are going to believe what they want to believe; screw the facts.

Here’s what the bill actually contains:A set of national voter registration and mail-in voting standards: H.R. 1 requires the chief election official in each state — the secretary of state in most — to establish an automatic voter-registration system that gathers individuals’ information from government databases and registers them unless they intentionally opt out.And it says it’s the government’s responsibility to keep that information up-to-date, based on information from agencies like state motor vehicle administrations, agencies that receive money from Social Security or the Affordable Care Act, the justice system, and federal agencies including the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, the Social Security Administration and others. The law would also guarantee voters same-day registration either at early voting sites or at precincts on Election Day. Each state would be required to allow at least 15 days of early voting for federal elections, for at least 10 hours a day with at least some time before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m. The law would limit how states can purge voter rolls.Nonpartisan redistricting commissions: In an attempt to get rid of gerrymandering, the law would require each state to use independent commissions (not made up of lawmakers) to approve newly drawn congressional districts. The commissions would each include five Democrats, five Republicans and five independents, requiring bipartisan approval for districts to be allowed.“Regardless of whether it’s a red state or a blue state, we are seeing significant manipulation in the legislative redrawing of districts,” said Tom Lopach, CEO of the nonpartisan Voter Participation Center, which has advocated for the bill. “H.R. 1 presents an opportunity for everyone to get onboard with independent, unbiased and balanced redistricting that frankly is good government.”
