Starting with the psychopath’s campaign, right up to today. Their language has always been deferential. They should have said the word “lie” right from the start to describe his lies. They should have called him out every day. But they didn’t. They reported much more ambiguously. “Misrepresented” “Exagerated” “Misleading” all were euphemisms.

The malignant narcissism should have been called out every day. The incompetence called for what it was.

The press shaded their descriptions in their reporting, even as they spoke plainly in their editorials.

They were far too easy on this guy. Mental,illness is what it is. Call it out.

When you treat someone like a stupid patsy by lying, refusing access etc, they tend to react by disliking you, and looking for bad things to say about you (an easy task, recently). Treat that same person with polite respect and it gets reflected back to you. Good newspeople will still demand … and publish … facts. Bad ones will still probably do only and exactly what they’re hired to do.
