By the way Ramirez, those companies have every right to enforce their terms of use.

After WW2 in 1949, we enacted the Fairness Doctrine because we saw how lies unchecked had encouraged the rise of fascism in Europe. “Honest, equitable and balanced,” would that be a step too far, to protect free speech in America?

“The fairness doctrine of the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC), introduced in 1949, was a policy that required the holders of broadcast licenses to both present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a manner that was honest, equitable, and balanced.” WIKI

There’s no threat to freedom of speech. Trump, people who support him, conspiracy theorists, Q-anon, Militia Men, Proud Boys, Bugaloo, etc. are all learning that you’re responsible for what you say and what happens after you say it.

People are still allowed to express themselves responsibly.

Not if “free speech” involves inciting crowds of unhinged supporters into storming and defacing government buildings, using assault weapons to terrorize citizens, and carrying around zip ties with the aim of holding our lawmakers hostage.

The words “cancel culture” have no meaning. If they did everything that Trump has done would fall under that term, from trying to eliminate everything his predecessor accomplished to turning all Democratic governors and mayors into enemies to eliminating science as an approach to solving pandemic and climate issues. I could probably go on about things he’s tried to cancel, but it is exhausting.

So why do republicans lie all the time and hide the truth?

Benedict Arnold Trump was punished for inciting a riot where they intended to kill Pence and Pelosi. A twitter ban is a slap on the wrist, Trump should be in prison.

This isn’t just about the Trump ban! Who really cares about Trump being banned? Amazon flexed it’s monopoly to prevent Parler from coming back. Thousands upon thousands of people got banned from Twitter following the riot. Banned, not suspended. I suspect a fair portion did not advocate violence.

Yes, I know the following does not specifically address the right wing invention of “cancel culture,” but many comments are directed toward Trump’s fomenting rebellion.

    From Wikipedia:

“Shouting fire in a crowded theater” is a popular analogy for speech or actions made for the principal purpose of creating panic. The phrase is a paraphrasing of Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.‘s opinion in the United States Supreme Court case Schenck v. United States in 1919, which held that the defendant’s speech in opposition to the draft during World War I was not protected free speech under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. The case was later partially overturned by Brandenburg v. Ohio in 1969, which limited the scope of banned speech to that which would be directed to and likely to incite imminent lawless action (e.g. a riot).

The paraphrasing differs from Holmes’s original wording in that it typically does not include the word falsely, while also adding the word “crowded” to describe the theatre. The original wording used in Holmes’s opinion (“falsely shouting fire in a theatre and causing a panic”) highlights that speech that is dangerous and false is not protected, as opposed to speech that is dangerous but also true.

And there you have it. Trump has falsely been claiming that he lost because of fraud. And his invitations to protest did incite lawless action.

There is every legal reason, therefore to ban Trump from exercising his power to incite riot. Along with many others.

Cancel culture is a pain in the ass. It makes it’s practitioners look petty and close minded.

But. The right has some nerve calling it out. The music industry has a verb “dixiechicked” meaning your career gets stomped on when you take an unpopular political stand. We could also talk about McCarthyism which canceled many careers in the 50’s.

The left did not invent cancel culture.

Yes, if cancel culture means eradicating the hateful white supremacist, racist, anti-Semitic and misogynist element from our society then it deserves to go down in flames. As far as free speech goes, I don’t hear of the government restricting anyones voice. Do you?

Cancel culture, the Totalitarian approved way to punish anyone personally, professionally, and financially if they are found out to support the wrong candidate, cause, or agenda. Fear and intimidation can be a powerful motivator to get the submission desired in Authoritarian regimes. Xiden’s deep thinkers are already talking about “deprogramming” people, which is a good euphemism for re-education camps.

This is the thing Republicans have abused time and again. Freedom of speech has it’s limits. Freedom of speech was never intended to protect people from lying, inciting violence, and letting a bunch of murderous thugs overthrow our government.

Sadly, all too often it has been allowed to do so.

The biggest threats to America are a) lax gun laws; b) poor education levels; c) low wages; d) poor public health; e) politicians who lie, cheat and steal. The list is long, should you care to examine life in America Mr Ramirez. The ‘cancel culture’ is the least of your problems. People have been banning things for over one hundred years. In my old trade union days we had bans on dealing with merchants and companies who underpaid wages, or treated employees as second class. Unionists would refuse to unload ships from countries who treated their citizens cruelly and we would ban exports to the same. Nothing new and the world carried on.

Ramirez represents America as the Hindenburg, a zeppelin that was at times used to drop Adolf Hitler’s fascist propaganda…. swastikas emblazoned on its tail. After four long years with the Mussolini impersonator as president, with the Fox News, Breitbart and National Review adding a pinch of right wing spin to every story, Ramirez is so off balance, he can’t tell who he stands with….. seems he’s with Trump’s fascist “Proud Boys” ….

“Although designed and built for commercial transatlantic passenger, air freight, and mail service, at the behest of the Reich Ministry for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda (Reichsministerium für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda or Propagandaministerium), Hindenburg was first pressed into use by the Air Ministry (its DLZ co-operator) as a vehicle for the delivery of Nazi propaganda.” WIKI

It sounds like a really good solution to set up a committee of some sort to preview news and only allow the broadcast of the true, factually based information that is needed to form opinions. Then go ahead and give opinions, but clearly label them as opinions. But who keeps an eye on the committee to be sure it doesn’t slowly creep in one direction or the other? It might be safer to have Faux and Limbaugh clearly and knowingly lying through their teeth than to have something that we are supposed to be able to trust that could be corrupted.
