If I had been Janis I would have answered: certainly you may. And leave it to Arlo to take it to the kitchen himself.

No, you sit corrected. Long-standing (or sitting) correction and joke in our family.

Sorry, but a language is how people use it, not how someone in the 1870s used it.

Based on news stories during pandemania, in real life the last panel would involve a knife.

Tyge wrote, “Happy wife, happy life.” Ever notice how husbands and fathers are rarely, if ever, mentioned in that fashion?

Tyge reminded me of a bumper sticker I once saw that was a response to “If Mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.”

The sticker stated, “Papa’s unhappy, and nobody cares.”

This is a pet peeve of mine. I see it here and many other comments sections. You make a spelling error or grammatical error and there are usually 3 posters ready to jump on you. WHY? If the comment is easily understood the way it is posted, leave it be. It is no ones job to correct adults who post here. I can only assume they do it because they feel empowered by the anonymity of the web. IF you know that a stranger would slap you if you did it to them while standing in front of them, DON’T assume you can do that here. Leave it be and carry on with your day. By the way, what do you feed ‘pet’ peeves?

We’ve got so many grammar Nazis these days. There’s such a thing as speaking colloquially.

Y’all done with this here glass? If so, would you kindly get you ass in gear and take it to the kitchen. I do not expect to find it anywhere other than in the freshly emptied dishwasher. A reminder, I do not like to be disappointed.

Can may be the right rhetorical question. May would be asking permission to do it. Can would be an inquiry if he was physically going to allow her to do it. If there is a little bit of beer left in the bottom of the glass, she might not be able to grab it before he resisted. Taking glass or plate away from a guy is almost always a can I do it versus a may I do it moment.

I assume a man, who is bigger and stronger than I am, can handle his own dishes and glasses. And he can probably reach the higher shelves to put some of those items away, too. I wonder if that is a running joke with them – I have a neighbor who will say “more better” just to annoy the spouse. It makes us all laugh.

At least she asked first. Arlo might be annoyed if she grabbed his glass and he was not done with it.
