John Lewis must be radiating sunshine and Georgia peaches to be smiling down on two Georgia senate runoff victories that not only brought the first African American ever to the senate representing the state he came from after his lifetime fighting for the right to vote and equal participation, but also making his state, with a Black man representing it, the state that gave Joe Biden a Democratic senate majority.
Thank you and praise … Stacey Abrams!
And don’t forget Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter, a good and decent man, was the governor who succeeded racist Lester Maddox, who rose to fame refusing to serve African Americans in his restaurant, defying the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and beating Black people with a pick handle. With a bipartisan message of conciliation, Carter, who had grown up in Plains, Georgia, 80% Black, joined with Martin Luther King Senior, surviving father of the slain leader to whom he had given his own name, and Andrew Young, King Junior’s close advisor, to use his two terms in the Georgia statehouse to lay the foundations of a new Georgia.
John Lewis fought for the right to vote and built on the foundations of Jimmy Carter to become politically viable; Stacey Abrams mobilized the community to make it a practical reality.
And Joe Biden is very aware that his win is directly due to African American voters, and especially African American women.
He won the swing states by huge turnout from African American communities in Milwaukee and Madison (Wisconsin), Detroit (Michigan), Philadelphia and Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania) and the Atlanta metro area and Savannah (Georgia). Without those voting blocs, Biden would not have won.
African Americans put Biden in the White House AND delivered him a senate.
While I thank the Georgia voters who elected two new senators, I highly doubt the spirit of John Lewis is smiling after the attack upon the Capitol. But possibly by at least one (and why weren’t there more?) representative who upon seeing Black men working to clean up that mess, became appalled and rolled up his sleeves and helped. That might have pleased him. It’s another start.
I saw a poster which read, “Trump succeeded! We have a Democrat President, a Democrat Senate, and a Democrat House. He really did make America great again!”

Could it be the endemically racist, rotten-to-its-peach-pit state of Georgia will finally redeem itself?
I never imagined such a thing conceivable until now. My best wishes for success go to its radical change agents.

Now let’s get Congress to authorize a John Lewis Voting Rights Act, to ban gerrymandering, and to legislate Citizen’s United out of existence.

Luckovich is awesome. Love this. He draws John Lewis really well.
So, what’s up with angels needing corrective eyewear?
