There is probably no causal relation between man-buns and stupidity, in either direction. But the question of why they exist will probably never be answered.

Man-buns certainly do a better job of hiding baldness than a comb-over. They look just as stupid, though.

The reason man buns exist is because humans have always decorated their bodies and styled their hair, styles and fashions change over time, and it is a practical solution for people with long hair, whether they are male or female.

Why this panel exists, because the cartoonist wants to celebrate difference by making fun of cultural differences on the grounds that he is actually scared of cultural differences.
